  7. Geriatric Social Work Initiative • The number of older people, particularly the oldest old (85+), is growing, and they need more assistance to remain active and independent. • Aging-savvy social workers serve as “navigators” and “expediters,” enabling older adults and families to understand and choose among the array of available health and social services.

  8. Geriatric Enrichment Program • Most social workers today state that aging knowledge is required for effective practice. The need for this expertise will only increase as the population ages. • BSW and MSW programs, however, offer limited courses, seminars and other learning experiences focused on aging.

  9. Faculty Scholars Program • The program includes three components: • Two years of integrated faculty development designed to strengthen critical research, teaching and leadership skills. • A professional development plan, overseen by a school-based sponsor. • Support for a community-based research project with consultation from a National Research Mentor.

  10. Faculty Development Program • Knowledge of aging is increasingly critical to the practice of social work, and the need for this expertise will only increase as the population ages. • Too few social work faculty, however, have the ability to teach students about aging issues.

  11. Doctoral Fellows Program • A shortage of trained faculty limits the ability to prepare the next generation of aging-savvy social workers. • Today’s doctoral students in social work are tomorrow’s faculty capable of preparing needed practitioners and conducting research that defines best practice.

  12. Practicum Partnership Program • These practicum models: • Test new approaches using consortia of local agencies and enriched experiences across a continuum of care. • Draw new students into social work programs related to aging. • Serve as a vehicle for enhancing geriatric field work education.
