  1. NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC DATA CENTER PHILIPPINES

  2. HISTORY of PHILIPPINE NODC: • 1961 – National Committee on Marine Science (NCMS) was • formed to serve as the focal point of IOC in the • country • 1966 – NCMS designated the then Bureau of Coast & Geodetic Survey (BCGS) as the custodian of the NODC • 1968- Philippines became a participating member of IODE • system with the implementation of the CSK project • 1987 – National Mapping and Resource Information Authority • (NAMRIA) was created to merge all mapping • agencies where BCGS was included together with (3) • other agencies

  3. NODC Data Holdings • Types of data holdings currently in the NODC: • 1. Tides • 2. Tidal and ocean currents • 3. BT data • 4. Salinity and density • 5. Water temperature • 6. Ocean meteorology • The type of data in the NODC were results of: • a. Oceanographic data from cooperative • projects. • b. Data acquired through bilateral exchange with • other countries . • c. NAMRIA data collected in the performance of its • function as a hydrographic and • oceanographic office of the government.

  4. OTHER DATA CONCERNS • Bathymetric data are currently stored in our map production unit • Data from other fields such as chemical, biological, meteorological and geophysical are still in the archives of the agencies concerned. • Data are available in forms, reports, publications, and/ or floppy disks.

  5. Data Processing, Management and Exchange • Processing: • The technology extended by JODC in 1988 and 1989 which introduced the digitization of analog data have help a lot in the continuing development of the NODC. • Some of the computer equipment and oceanographic software from that assistance have been continuously in use for data processing and management • As with the other software and equipment provided by the ASEAN-Australia Cooperative Programme on Marine Science Projects Tides and Tidal Phenomena (TTP) and Regional Ocean Dynamics (ROD). • Further development of software are still being undertaken by NAMRIA for its NODC especially from the System Development and Programming Division of the Information Management Department of NAMRIA. • Also incorporating the software from UHLC

  6. Exchange: • In addition, among the involvement of Philippine NODC in the international data exchange are: • ASEAN-Australia Cooperative Programme on Marine Sciences which involves “tides and tidal phenomena (TTP) project and the regional ocean Dynamics (ROD) project - Current Metering Experiment” • Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS)/ PSMSL • Integrated Global Ocean Services System (IGOSS)/ IGOSS Sea Level Project in the Pacific (ISLPP) • Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere (TOGA) • World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) • Pacific Tsunami Warning System (PTWS)

  7. Other NODC Related Activity of NAMRIA 1. Digital capture of time series meteorological data of survey vessels in its transit and survey routes. 2. Plan to retrieve old log books of survey vessels for eventual conversion to digital format. 3. To increase data holdings of CTD observations. 4. ADCP data would soon be an addition to its data holdings. 5. NAMRIA digitization of old analog data to digital format from past years of observation beginning from 1947 is still in progress.  6. At the national level, consultative meetings of the NCMS committee are constantly in progress to address the issue to fully develop the Philippine NODC.
