  1. New Tolonate™ X FLO 100

  2. Tolonate™ X FLO 100 :Bio-based & Low viscosity • Partially bio-based, aliphatic isocyanate polymer, • Based on Hexamethylene Diisocyanate (HDI), • Solvent free, extremely low viscosity, • Tolonate™ X FLO 100 is designed to produce solvent-free polyurethane materials and/or to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions of polyurethane formulations. • Its functionality being 2, Tolonate™ X FLO 100 can be used as a building blocks to produce UV-curing resins, TPU’s, PUD’s….. or any other urethane chemistry Putting the care into chemicals

  3. Tolonate™ X FLO 100 :a bio-based product • Partially bio-based. it contains: • 32% of “green carbon” : measured according to ASTM-D6866 standard (14C measurement). This is the weight % of carbon of the renewable part vs total amount of carbon of the molecule. • 25% of renewable material according to the evaluation done by ACDV (Association Chimie Du Végétal). Weight of all atoms (not only C) of the renewable part vs total weight of molecule • This can be advertised using the specific logo of the ACDV: Much more than innovative chemical solutions Putting the care into chemicals

  4. Tolonate™ X FLO 100 : a new low viscosity grade Miscible in all proportions with hydrophobic and hydrophilic polyisocyanates.

  5. Tolonate™ X FLO 100 Specifications and characteristics • Specifications : • Other properties: • Appearance Clear liquid • Colour 80 HAZEN (APHA) approx. • Solids content 100% approx. • Bulk density at 25°C 1 041 kg/m3 approx. • Weight per US gallon 8.67 lbs approx. • Flash point (closed cup) > 120°C • NCO Equivalent weight 325 g approx. Putting the care into chemicals

  6. Tolonate™ X FLO 100Safety/Regulatory position • Tolonate™ X FLO 100 is registered in the USA. Canada. China. Taiwan. Korea. Japan and considered as a polymer in Europe (therefore exempted for REACH registration requirements). • New products based on Tolonate ™ X FLO 100 will also benefit from the polymer status in Europe. • Toxicological profile is similar to other HDI-oligomers: • H317: May cause an allergic skin reaction. • H335: May cause respiratory irritation. 7. Where we can use it ? What will be the effect ? • Tolonate™ X FLO 100 can be used as a crosslinker or co/crosslinker(reactive diluent). It is recommended to mix it with other polyisocyanates to increase the functionality and reach efficient crosslinking. • Tolonate™ X FLO 100 is also suitable as building block thanks to its NCO functionality around 2. Moisture cure systems Polyurethanes, polyureaselastomers Solventborne, waterborne coatings Solvent free coatings Polyurea coatings Building block • Polyurethane acrylates (PUA). • Polyurethane dispersions (PUD) • Thermoplastic urethanes (TPU) . ... summary

  8. Tolonate™ X FLO 100 as building block for resins and materials • Functionality around 2 makes Tolonate™ X FLO 100 suitable as a reactant in the synthesis of coatings resins: • Polyurethane acrylates (PUA). • Polyurethane dispersions (PUD) • Thermoplastic urethanes (TPU) . ... • Main benefits will be : • Better toxicity profile compared to monomers, • Polymer status (in Europe), • “high” reactivity (same as HDI) vs IPDI or H12MDI, • Positive impact of the flexibility(PUD for leather) and viscosityof the end resin.

  9. Building block for PUA Reaction of HDI or Tolonate™ X FLO 100 with acrylated pentaerytrytol The influence of Tolonate™ X FLO 100 is clearly seen on the final viscosity of the PUA (30% of reduction !)

  10. Crosslinker for cast elastomers • Ideal for polyurethane cast elastomers application where light stability and optical clarity are needed. • Will help reaching low viscosity, ideal for potting applications • Improves the compatibilitywith hydrophobic resin like Hydroxy Terminated Poly Butadiene (HTPB). • Main usage: soft to semi hard materials (shore A = 25-80).

  11. Crosslinker for cast elastomers Soft formulation based on HTPB • Main benefit of Tolonate™ X FLO 100 : • “cutting power” (viscosity), • improvement of elongation performances (however unlikely to be used a single hardener).

  12. Xlinker in solvent free systems: Moisture cure 1K coatings • Moisture cure coatings (MC) are 1 K systems where the polyisocyanate which will react with water –moisture (no resin). • A ~80/20 combination with Tolonate™ HDT-LV2 can provide low viscosityand right functionality to match the desired level of hardness.

  13. Xlinker in solvent free systems: 100 % 2K Polyurethanes • Systems do not contain solvent. Viscosity and compatibility are key for good end properties. • Benefit of Tolonate™ X FLO 100: • Viscosity, • Flexibility (performances at break). • Recommendation is to use Tolonate™ X FLO 100 in combination with standard HDI-trimers or biuret to maintain good chemical resistance.

  14. Xlinker in solvent free systems: 100 % 2K Polyurethanes Tolonate™ X FLO 100 will improve the elongation while keeping good mechanical resistance.

  15. Xlinker in solvent free systems: 100 % 2K Polyureas • Polyureas are being used to a growing extent in coatings and materials, as an alternative to PU. Main benefit is fast reactivity & hardness. • Typical application : coatings for flooring, protective (windmills, tanks, containers, pipe coatings, ...) but car refinish applications are also raising. • To be recommended in combination with others polyisocyanatesto avoid damaging hardness and chemical resistance.

  16. Xlinker in solvent free coatings: 100 % 2K Polyureas Tolonate™ X FLO 100 will globally improve the formulation. Polyaspartic system crosslinked with blend Tolonate™ HDT LV2 and Tolonate™ X FLO 100.

  17. Crosslinker in 2K WB PU coatings Tolonate™ X FLO 100 can be used to optimize 2 K PU WB formulations. White topcoat based on acrylic polyol Crosshatch adhesion test after 3 days in hot water (40°C) 5 = good 0 = fail • Benefits of Tolonate™ X FLO 100: • Viscosity /VOC, • Film appearance (gloss), • Wetting and adhesion on apolar substrates (plastics).

  18. Crosslinker in 2K SB PU coatings Benefit in high solids formulations. Formulation based on acrylic polyol Optimum for VOC saving lies around 30 %.

  19. Crosslinker in 2K SB PU coatings Weathering data : QUV B White topcoat based on Uracron CY 474 E-70 from DSM 1.5 % Tinuvin 1130 0.5 % Tinuvin 292 Tolonate™ X FLO 100 shows similar durability vs other low viscosity polyisocyanatesafter QUV B exposure.

  20. Tolonate™ X FLO : what should be remembered • Very low viscosity polyisocyanate • Contains 25 % renewable material • As a crosslinker, recommendation is to use it combination with other polyisocyanates(20-30 %) • Suitable for a large variety of application where main benefits will be : • Low viscosity • Hydrophobicity • Safe toxicological profile • Flexibility/control of mechanical properties
