  3. Unique Qualities of Romantic Music • Music from the romantic era was seen as more passionate and expressive than that of its predecessors. This reflects romanticism’s ideals of truth though emotion not logic.

  4. John Phillip Sousa • Sousa served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an apprentice musician and eventually became the head of the Marine Corps Band. • Famous Pieces: • The Thunderer • Manhattan Beach March • Stars and Stripes Forever

  5. Ludwig von Beethoven 17 December 1770– 26 March 1827 Of 7 children Ludwig and his two younger brothers survived infancy. Ludwig’s first music teacher was his father and his father was so hard on him that Ludwig was often in tears while he was playing. Toured all over Europe, mostly in Vienna and started playing for kings and queens. Ludwig began to suffer from tinnitus which is a ringing in the ears and he started to go def. He couldn’t appreciate music like before and he avoided conversation and became very secluded and irritable. To still write music he cut the legs off of his piano and put his ear to the floor to while playing and he could feel the vibrations and tell the difference between the keys.
