About The Oaks… • The Oaks is the psychiatric hospital located on the New Hanover Regional Medical Center campus. • The Oaks provides inpatient and outpatient services for adults (18 & up) • The Oaks is licensed and accredited by the Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
History of The Oaks… • The Oaks was opened in 1987. • No one knows anything else.
About the Oaks, cont’d… • Mission Statement: NHRMC is a team-centered, value-focused, teaching provider of health care to all in need of its services. • Funding-Medicare, Medicaid, personal insurance, donations, Federal funding.
Inpatient Units… • Behavioral Medicine (30 beds): Offers structured treatment in a secure and safe environment for a broad range of psychiatric disorders. • Dual Diagnosis (22 beds): Offers treatment for chemical addiction, in addition to affective disorders and/or other psychiatric needs. • Progressive (10 beds): This unit offers treatment for those who are experiencing acute crisis and issues of affective disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder.
Other Services offered… • Triage and screening services: Assessments are done to determine the need of mental health services. • ECT/Shock Therapy: For patients who fail to respond to other treatment and may benefit from this treatment. • Partial Hospitalization: 20 hour/week program where patients receive treatment during the day and return home for the evenings/weekends.
My duties at The Oaks… • Observation • Sit in on/participate in Group Therapy • Participate in Art Therapy • Interact with patients during gym/outside time (ping-pong, basketball, pool, exercise, croquet) • Help put data in the computer • Help with trays at dinner/record how much the patients eat (in %) • Talked with patients one-on-one • Help during cigarette breaks
