  1. Ms. Denise’s Second Grade Class Welcome, students!

  2. Welcome to Second Grade! • I will introduce you to second grade and to our classroom. • If you have any questions during the year, please ask.

  3. All About Me • My background • I have lived in Maurice for 31 years. • I attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana. • My experience • I’ve been teaching for 20 years. • I have also taught first, third, fourth, and sixth grades, but second is my favorite.

  4. My Family • My husband • John, self-employed • Our children • son, Steven is a graduate of ULL 2006, majored in Civil Engineering Presently employed with Baker Hughes as a mud engineer • daughter, Jena is a graduate of ULL 2006, majored in Elementary Education 1-6 and PreK-3Presently teaching Kindergarten at Indian Bayou Elementary • Proud grandparents to Cole James Gaspard, born Nov. 2011. • Our pets • dog, Beau (sheltie) • granddog, Beau’s sister Bella (sheltie)

  5. My Goals • To give you the academic and social skills you need to progress to third grade. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • To help you make new friends and discover new interests.

  6. Class Subjects • The subjects we cover during second grade are: • Reading • Math • Language • Spelling • Science and Social Studies (Social Living)

  7. Reading • Monday: review vocabulary words • Tuesday: read and discuss story • Wednesday: phonics skills are taught • Thursday: reading skills are taught • Friday: test day, introduce vocabulary words for next week AR is a program designed to encourage you to read. I ask that you read 20 minutes every night. This will certainly improve your reading fluency, so you may become an excellent reader.

  8. Math • ABC’s of Math requires you to use critical thinking skills. • You must read the problem, draw a picture, write a complete number sentence, and always finish with a label. For example: • 2 dogs + 3 dogs = 5 dogs • 4 bears + 6 lions = 10 animals ABC’s of Math also drills basic math facts. These facts will be timed and tested weekly. You must master these facts in second grade. I encourage you to practice your facts each day.

  9. Language/Spelling • Language lessons will correlate with skills taught in reading and spelling. • You will learn about nouns, verbs, pronouns, and adjectives. • Spelling words are written in the students planner on Friday. Test are always given on Thursday. • We begin the year with 15 words and 2 dictation sentences. Later in the year, the list will increase to 20 words.

  10. Science • We will learn many interesting and exciting concepts in science. • We will study matter, sound, light, electricity, plants, animals, the earth, and then weather. • You are encouraged to bring things from home, which relate to the topics we are discussing.

  11. Social Studies • We will learn about communities, history, geography, map skills, government, citizenship, economics, and different cultures from around our world. • Again, you are encouraged to bring things from home, which relate to the topics we are discussing.

  12. Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. • Our basic class rules are: • Be respectful and responsible. • Be organized and follow directions. • Be on time. • Be prepared.

  13. Homework • You are responsible for completing your homework each night. • Homework is always copied in your planner. • I will assign about 45 minutes of homework every night. This should include 20 minutes of reading. • Your homework is due every morning. • If homework is not completed, you will work on it at recess. This will also be marked on your discipline card and a note may be written in your planner. • Homework is never given on Fridays.

  14. Tardiness • School starts at 8:10 A.M. • Morning work is assigned each day. If you are late, this will be assigned for homework. • If you aren’t in the classroom by the time the bell rings, please check in at the school office before coming to class.
