  1. HISTORICAL LINKS OF VARIOUS SPORTS

  2. What modern sports originated from the following historical areas? • Invasion games • Target games • Court games • Field sports • Religious rituals

  3. INVASION GAMES • Games such as rugby, football, hockey are warlike games, where the object is to invade an opponent’s territory. • Their origins lay in mob games where one community would play another usually to defend or steal something

  4. TARGET GAMES • Involve the use of marksmanship e.g. archery • They have clear links to war/defence • Games such as golf and bowls also fit into this category

  5. COURT GAMES • Sophisticated games with rules and defined playing areas • Thought to represent a sophisticated culture and were expensive so often confined to upper classes • Non contact and mainly individual contests

  6. FIELD SPORTS • Associated with finding food and survival e.g. hunting, shooting, fishing • Also associated with the enjoyment of the chase • Associated with the upper classes

  7. RELIGIOUS RITUALS • Include animal baiting e.g. bears and bulls with dogs • The animal being baited was seen as ‘bad’ and man showed his supremacy over it
