  2. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 • Rubric for 4-part conclusion, part 1 • Can answer the question to the lab using scientific vocabulary and at least 2specific examples from the lab Question for the lab is: Why is the population of southern sea otters declining at Ocean Edge?

  3. Wednesday, December 12, 2012 • The population of the southern sea otters is declining because…..(look at the population models) • One reason this would cause the population to decline is…. • For example,

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 • The population of the southern sea otters is declining because the population models showed a decrease in the sub-adult population. • One reason this would cause the population to decline is the sub-adults need to become adults to be able to reproduce. • For example if there is a decrease in reproduction, then the birth rates will drop and the entire life cycle will be disrupted. This will affect all age groups of the sea otter population.

  5. Thursday, December 13, 2012 • Can accept or reject the hypothesis and support this point of view with at least two pieces of data • Hypothesis: If sharks are in the area, then the population of sea otters will decline because sharks are predators

Thursday, December 13, 2012 • The hypothesis was rejected because the sub-adult population of sea otters was declining because they were being caught in fishing nets, not because they were being eaten by sharks. Since the population model proved it was the sub –adults that were dying off, the data for this population was the focus for proving why the entire population was declining. The number of deaths in the sub-adult population were……

Friday, December 14, 2012 • Data Reliability: Can state whether data is reliable and support with at least 2 reasons (measuring instrument, precision of measurement, errors with measurement, sample technique, number of trials) The data is reliable in the Sea OtterInvestigation because all age groups of otters were studied over a long period of time. Computers were used to aid in calculating population models and checked against a controlled population.
