CleanupUK • A charity dedicated to tackling the UK’s litter problem by encouraging and supporting the activities of volunteer litter-collecting groups • Aims to educate the next generation not to drop litter in the first place by helping volunteer groups to work with their local schools • Working with Keep Britain Tidy on the Big Tidy Up • Runs the Litteraction.org.uk website with CPRE – a base for volunteer litter groups and individuals • Running a pilot project in the North West later in 2010 • Working with LOCOG on “Litter Activists” project to encourage litter volunteering in Olympic Boroughs

  4. Why is Volunteer Activity Important ? • Community cohesion • Community engagement • It helps you do your job • It may even save you money………. • Behaviour change

Why is Volunteer Activity Important ? • Other people’s behaviour matters: people do many things by observing others and copying, and people are encouraged to continue to do things when they feel other people approve of their behaviour • People need to feel involved and effective to make a change: just giving people the incentives and information is not necessarily enough Environment Agency : Extending the “Rational Man” model of human behaviour: seven key principles – 2005

  7. Who Volunteers ? • Dedicated litter groups • Conservation groups • Residents’ associations • Friends of…….. • Civic pride groups • Other special interest and uniformed groups • Businesses • Individuals

  8. How Do You Identify Existing Volunteers ? • Keep a central list/database of existing groups • Ensure that Environment, Parks and Cleansing teams share information • Use all channels and forums to spread the word

  9. How Do You Find New Volunteers ? • Have a plan – what’s in it for them ? • Commit to the issue • Exploit all your networks • Be enthusiastic • Show recognition • Make it fun
