  1. Before you Apply Cultivate Letters of Recommendation. Talk to people who work at small colleges, network with them. Volunteer to develop skills. (teaching, mentoring, working with students from diverse backgrounds) Develop a research plan that is feasible. (cost, time, expectation of student contributions, appropriate funding agencies, long term strategy)

  2. Specifics Networking: At a Biophysical Society Meeting I met a Prof. at St. Olaf. She set up an informational interview for me, encouraged me to apply for a position, turned out to be on the search committee, and ultimately I came in as a runner up. (A contact at SPU set me up with an adjunct position…) Volunteering: Demonstrates you are a “good citizen” and take initiative. I volunteered as a WiSE tutor for ~4 years, served on the UW Exam Committee, started a guitar class for teens… Research: Participate in the development of the science and finances of your project. Internal “training” proposals (nano tech, molecular biology, external sources)

  3. You see a job posting… Research the school: What students does it serve? What is the expectation for research? How many majors are their? Size of endowment? Do you think you would be a good fit?

  4. Prepare an application Make a phone call to the department, it will get you on their radar. If they get 100 applications your phone call may get you a second look. Write and Re-write… Cover letter (try to tailor it to the school) Teaching Philosophy Research Plan C.V. Letters of Recommendation

  5. Interview Process Meeting the Department Touring the Campus Giving a Presentation (maybe two) Meeting the Dean What do you want to get out of this? What do you want to learn?

  6. Interview Process Random Thought… Find some mechanism to avoid telling the same story over and over again.

  7. Meeting the Department You will probably have personal interviews with all the tenured/tenure track people in the department. 1) What kind of a sense do you get about the group as a whole. 2) Be yourself and determine if you will fit in… you may not. 3) Have Questions!

  8. Interviewing with the Dean • Why are you talking to this person(?)… • Remember, the Dean is limited by many factors you probably won’t know about. • The Dean is probably the person you will negotiate your position with.

  9. Mistakes I have made… Demonstrate you are interested in becoming a better teacher in twenty years. Not being yourself... Being overly excited and interested in “physics.” Being deferential to my “peers.” Not offering up enough of my own ideas.

  10. Misconceptions I had… I would be judged on the quality of my research. I had no chance in actually getting the job.

  11. Good Luck… Frankly, luck does have a lot to do with it. Preparation can help you know how to leverage where you are lucky. Don’t get discouraged! You will do great! And don’t use wordy slides like I did.

  12. Resources http://www.niehs.nih.gov/ofcd/files/campbell-teaching.pdf More General than you would think. NIH has many resources of “cell biology” scientists that are excellent. http://www.physics.dal.ca/~adr/FILES/collegejobs.html http://www.cur.org/Quarterly/jun98/smallcollege.pdf Excellent Article Funding Agencies: Besides NIH, NSF, DOD, and DOE… Research Corporation, Petroleum Research Fund, Dreyfus Foundation. Organizations: Project Kaleidoscope, CUR, AAPT, ACS
