  2. Objectives: • 1. Identify symptoms of anxiety and depression. • 2. Apply strategies for coping with anxiety and depression • 3. List warning signs of major depression that should prompt individuals to seek professional help.

  3. What is Anxiety? • Anxiety is the condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen. • Sometimes anxious feelings can have positive results that can motivate you! • Sometimes anxiety can keep you alert in a risky situation.

  4. Symptoms of anxiety: 1. Feelings of fear or dread 2. Perspiration, trembling, restlessness, or muscle tension 3. Rapid heart rate, lightheadedness, or shortness of breath. 4. Striving for perfection

  5. Strategies for Coping with Anxiety 1. Redirecting your energy 2. Doing relaxation exercises 3. Engaging in physical exercise 4. Getting support from friends/family Some escape by turning to Drugs and Alcohol which finds a temporary, false sense of relaxation

  6. What is Depression? Depression is more than occasional sad mood that lasts for a few days Depression: is a prolonged feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, and sadness which is not easy to manage.

  7. 2 Types of Depression Reactive Depression is a response to a stressful event such as the death of a friend. Usually this depression goes away Major Depression is a medical condition requiring treatment May develop from reactive depression May be a chemical imbalance in the brain May be a genetic tend

Symptoms of Teen Depression • Many young people who are suffering from depression don’t act sad or seem outwardly different to their family or friends. • Symptoms include: • Irritable or restless mood • Withdrawal from friends and activities • A change in appetite or weight • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness • A sense of hopelessness

Getting Help for Anxiety and Depression Talk to supportive people Get more physically active Consider volunteering When Anxiety and Depression persist… How to identify appropriate community resources providing information on mental health and suicide prevention Watch for changes in mood, sleep and energy levels Talk to a parent, other trusted adult, and seek help from a counselor, social worker or other health care professional.
