  1. The Raven & the First Men • Carved by Haida Artist Bill Reid • Unveiled on April 1st, 1980 • Haida Carving • Depicts the story of human creation, according to the Haida legend

  2. Why I Chose This Carving • It was the most eye catching and appealing carving to me. • I thought it would have more information available. • It is famous and well known

The Story • The carving depicts the story of human creation according to the Haida legend. • Raven found himself alone one day in Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). • He found an extraordinary clam shell on the beach with a number of beings trapped inside • Those beings were known to be the first humans according to the Haida legend.

Who are the Haida? • An indigenous nation of the Queen Charlotte Islands in Northwestern Canada. • Known for there highly stylized and detailed art work and carvings. • The population of the Haida nations was about 10,000 in 1750-1800. • The full name for the nation is “Haida Gwaii” which means “Islands of the People”.
