  2. Traitors among us 1950-Sen. McCarthy warns of Communists in the State Department 1951- Julius and Ethel Rosenberg executed for passing atomic secrets to the USSR 1956- Invasion of the Body Snatchers plays on fears that people aren’t what they seem.

  3. Spread of Communism (p.1) • 1950-USSR and China sign mutual defense pact • 1950-N. Korea invades S. Korea • 1955- Syria becomes USSR ally • 1955- Warsaw Pact formed (Soviet Version of NATO) including many Eastern European nations. • 1958- Revolution in Iraq removes pro-British leader. Iraq allies itself with USSR.

  4. p. 2 • 1959- Cuban Revolution. Inspires similar revolutions in South America. • 1959-Communist Viet Cong fight against S. Vietnamese government. • The Blob turns spreading communism into a monster that literally swallows everything.

  5. Nuclear War • 1949- USSR first gets the bomb • 1952 – US places Nuclear bombers within range of Moscow • 1952-Britain gets the bomb • 1952- US tests first thermonuclear bomb • 1954- US launches first nuclear submarine • 1957- Strategic Air Command issues a continuous alert of Soviet attack.

  6. 1957- Soviet Premier Khrushchev declares missile superiority • 1957- Americans encouraged to build fallout shelters. • 1960- France gets the bomb. • 1961- USSR tests Tsar Bomba, most powerful Thermonuclear bomb ever. • “Godzilla” and other giant monster movies played on our fears of the unknown effects of radiation.

  7. 1- Steel surfaces evaporate, concrete surfaces explode, glass windows melt. Concrete reinforced multi-story office buildings collapse. 2- Aluminum siding evaporates, auto sheet metal and Lucite windows melt. Multi-story buildings with some reinforcement collapse. 3- Wood, plastics, heavy fabrics burst into flames and asphalt surfaces melt. Unreinforced brick and wood-frame buildings, like houses, collapse. 4- Upholstery, canvas, clothing burst into flames and painted surfaces explode. Unreinforced brick and wood-frame buildings, like houses, are severely damaged. 5- Severe 3rd degree burns to people; grass and shrubs ignite and fires spread. Unreinforced brick and wood-frame buildings, like houses, are badly damaged.
