  2. What is International Law? Generally, international law governs conflicts between countries. However, in some cases, international law may also apply to disputes within a country. This often occurs in cases of ethnic conflict or warring factions within a country.
  3. Does international law hold real power/authority? If a country signs an international treaty against human rights abuses, how will the treaty be governed or enforced? How willing would a nation be to surrender sovereignty to an outside authority? Sovereignty – the supreme authority of a nation-state to impose its power on its subjects within its defined boundaries,
  4. International vs. Domestic
  5. Antarctic Treaty gives 11 countries use of the land for peaceful purposes, bans nuclear waste and the disposal of radioactive waste Who owns it? Antarctica – no native population, “sovereignless land” (Antarctic Treaty) The seas (Convention on the Law of the Sea) The Stars/Moon/Outer space (Moon Treaty, Outer Space Treaty) The “high seas” or the open seas are free of sovereignty beyond 5.6 km from land Space is used for peaceful purposes. No nation can claim sovereignty over outer space, the moon , or other celestial bodies
  6. Treaties Treaties are international agreements that establish rules. Protocols, conventions, acts, etc. Signatories (signers) must follow the agreement
  7. Some methods of enforcement Economic sanctions – minimize or prevent economic activity Trade boycott –Iraq invasion of Kuwait Trade embargo – withhold foreign aid, prohibit or restrict imports/exports, use of military force International courts and tribunals – International Criminal Court (ICC)
  8. United Nations International organizations play a key role in the resolution of international conflict. The United Nations was created in 1945, after World War II. After World War II, many countries became concerned about the growing violence in our world. In response to this, a group of countries decided to form an organization for the purpose of maintaining peace and security in the world.
  9. The United Nations consists of approximately 192 member states and it is the most influential international organization in the world. The United Nations encourages countries to resolve their conflicts peacefully. As an alternative to war, the United Nations assists countries in the development of agreements and treaties. Peacekeeping is one of the principal ways in which the United Nations promotes peace.
