  1. Telescope Lab Purpose: 1. To determine the focal length of convex lenses. 2. To explore the relationship between the objective and eyepiece lenses of a telescope. Materials: lenses w/ supports, meter stick w/ supports, screen Ray Diagram/Hypothesis: Draw a ray diagram of a working telescope labeling the objective lens the eyepiece lens and the focal length. Draw these with a straightedge.

  2. Telescope Lab Ray Diagram/Hypothesis: Draw a ray diagram of a working telescope labeling the objective lens the eyepiece lens and the focal length. Draw these with a straightedge. Ray Diagrams: Objective Lens Eyepiece Lens http://www.physics.pomona.edu/sixideas/labs/LRM/LR07.pdf

  3. Telescope Lab Procedure: Find focal length of lens 1. Project image of outside light onto a screen. 2. The distance between lens and screen is f Combine lenses 1. Find two lenses with focal lengths that correspond with the data table. 2. The distance between lenses should be slightly larger than the sum of the two focal length. 3. Adjust distance to get the clearest possible image. 4. Judge magnification and clarity. 5. Repeat for next set of lenses.

  4. Telescope Lab Data Table: See Word Document of Data Table Analysis: Show calculation for magnification. Use the following equation: m = fobjective / feyepiece

  5. Telescope Lab Conclusion Questions: Give one difference and one similarity between refracting and reflecting telescopes. What is the purpose of the objective lens of a refracting telescope? What is the purpose of the eyepiece lens of a refracting telescope? Was the image you saw through your telescope upright or inverted? Explain its orientation in terms of what the objective lens does and what the eyepiece lens does. Describe how the magnification and clarity change as the focal length of you eyepiece lens increased. Describe how the magnification and clarity change as the focal length of you objective lens increased. Why would a telescope with a big magnification are longer than a telescope with a smaller magnification?

  6. Telescope Lab Everything except the Data Table should be handwritten. Points: Pre-lab w/ Ray diagrams 4 pts Data 4 pts Calculations 3 pts Conclusion 9 pts Total 20 pts
