  2. The Universal & The Local Church I. “Church” Used In These Two Senses A. Universal (Matt. 16:18; Eph. 3:10-11; 5:25-27). B. Local (1 Cor. 1:2; Rom. 16:16; Col. 4:15-16; Rev. 2:1ff). II. Distinctions Between The Two Senses A. Church Universal: Relationship, NOT Organization 1. Body of Christ (Col. 1:18; Eph. 1:22-23). 2. Family of God the Father (1 Tim. 3:15; Eph. 2:19). 3. Temple of the Spirit (Eph. 2:21-22; 1 Cor. 3:16). 4. Members enrolled in Heaven (Heb. 12:23). 5. Love the brotherhood (1 Pet. 2:17). Relationship Identified, But No Earthly Organization!

  3. The Universal & The Local Church II. Distinctions Between The Two Senses A. Church Universal: Relationship, NOT Organization B. Church Local: Relationship AND Organization 1. Fellowship in local work & worship (Acts 9:26; Rom. 16:1-2). 2. Local “body” over which some “rule” (Rom. 12:4-8; 1 Tim. 3:4; Heb. 13:17; 1 Pet. 5:1-2). 3. Seven churches addressed as local congregations (Rev. 2-3). 4. N.T. silent about any earthly organization beyond the local congregation (Heb. 7:14). If God Wanted More, He Would Have Revealed More.

  4. The Universal & The Local Church II. Distinctions Between The Two Senses C. Fellowship & Discipline On Universal Level 1. Jesus Adds (Acts 2:47). 2. Jesus Can Blot Out (Rev. 3:5; 2 Tim. 2:19). D. Fellowship & Discipline On Local Level 1. Jerusalem did not immediately receive Paul, until they were sure (Acts 9:26-28). 2. Phoebe & Apollos commended (Rom. 16:1-2; Acts 18:27). 3. Local discipline commanded (1 Cor. 5:1-5, 9-11; 2 Thess. 3:6, 11-15; Eph. 5:11). Must Administer Local Fellowship Properly (3 John 9-10)

  5. The Universal & The Local Church III. Every Local Congregation Is Sufficient & Complete As God Organized It A. The existence of the church of Christ in any community in no way depends upon the existence of another such congregation anywhere on the face of the earth (Independent & Sufficient, Acts 14:23). B. Its work, worship, oversight, etc. are all accomplished through the local organization (Rom. 16:1-2). C. If there were no other congregations, would our duties change? Would our privileges be altered? If There Were No Other Congregations, Would Our Duties & Blessings Be Anymore Or Less?

  6. Who Do You Bury (Baptize)? (Rom. 6:3-4, 9; Col. 2:11-13) Jesus Died Was Buried Jesus Was Raised “From The Dead” We Are Dead In Sin We Are Raised To Walk In Newness Of Life “We Are Buried With Him By Baptism”
