  1. Net Neutrality Rules Under Siege

  2. Net neutrality – the principle that Information online should be treated equally – is under attack again. Proposed FCC rules would gut net neutrality, allowing big companies to create fast tracks for certain traffic. The implication has severe implications for free speech, as well as for commercial activity.

  3. Benefits of Net Neutrality Free speech Free market competition Innovation

  4. Net Neutrality Prevents Censorship Because the law requires ISPs to treat all traffic equally, they can’t censor content by slowing or blocking access to controversial sites that government or big business may not want you to see. While the Internet can be an ugly place at times, most people would agree that they’d rather be the arbiter of what they get to see than let a big company make the call.

  5. Net Neutrality Benefits Small Business Net neutrality provides small businesses and start-ups with a level playing field to compete against established, well-heeled firms. Innovation and progress require competition, and net neutrality prevents stagnation in the online world of business.

  6. No Net Neutrality Means Higher Prices If ISPs can establish fast and slow lanes for Internet traffic, many businesses and individuals will have to pay more to get the access they need. Net neutrality means more reasonable prices for Internet access.

  7. What Happens If Net Neutrality Goes Away? If net neutrality is abolished, ISPs like Verizon and Comcast will be able to create tiers of Internet access, allowing more access to people who pay more. They’ll also be able to block content and other services from competitors. Businesses may also be charged to have their websites placed in “fast lanes.” A decision to end net neutrality could have chilling effects on free speech and free competition.

  8. A Bipartisan Issue? It’s rare in today’s highly polarized political climate to find an issue both Democrats and Republicans agree on, but there appears to be support in both grassroots liberal and conservative circles for maintaining net neutrality.

  9. What’s Happening Now The FCC recently proposed a set of new regulations that would effectively gut net neutrality. These rules have yet to be approved. In the Senate, Democrats have sponsored a bill that would guarantee net neutrality.
