  1. Rough Endoplasmic ReticulumER By: Hannah Moore and Aubrie Shanahan

  2. About • Called “rough” because ribosomes are attached to the membrane • Found in Eukaryotic cells • Manufacturing site for proteins • Endoplasmic means “within the plasma” • Reticulum means “network”

  3. Function • Isolate and transport proteins from the ribosomes • The ribosomes make amino acid chains • The ER pinches off a vesicles that transports for another use in the cell • Does the same with lipids

  4. How it was founded • Discovered by Albert Claude • Discovered it while using an electron microscope • Among the first scientists to use an electron microscope for cell study • He was awarded a Noble Prize for Medicine in 1974 for his work

  5. What have we learned before? • Proteins- macromolecules made from amino acids • Lipids- fats or oils that store energy and help build parts of cell membranes • Amino acids- important organic compounds made from amine and carboxylic acid functional groups

  6. What have we learned before? • Only found in plant and animal cells • Plant cells have a cell wall and animals cells don’t have a cell wall • Takes the amino acids from the cyst sol and use them to make proteins
