  7. TB in Sappi

  8. Sappi Manage TB • Centre of excellence: • Sappi Sister obtain the sputum sample • Sappi Sister submit sample to the DoH lab • Sappi Sister receive the results within 3-4 days • DoH liaise with Sappi sister regarding treatment • Sappi Sister initiate DOT and monitor the patient for duration of treatment. • Partnership between Sappi and DoH

  9. Situation in most of the Units: • Patient refer to local clinic with long waiting lists – loose a day of work • Wait 1-2-3 weeks for results – numerous phone calls, staff turnover • Patient to clinic where treatment is initiated – little to no communication with DoH • DOT: Never sure what DoH has implemented - Sappi implement another system. Cause confusion. • Repeat medication collection: patient loose each time a day from work. • Sputum results: Again communication breakdown

  10. Action required: • Sappi to initiate partnership with DoH. • Training of health personnel • Re-launch TB awareness programmes • Implement DOT • TB testing cumbersome and time consuming • Clinics safer places
