  15. Key contextual terminology • Capitalism Capitalism is an economic system where things (property, for example) are owned by people or an individual, not by a government or communities. People have to barter or work for money so they can buy things they need or want, such as food. Capital comes from the Latin word “value” or “money.”

  16. Key contextual terminology • Materialism Materialism (adj. materialistic) is the excessive desire to acquire and consume material goods • Has obvious links to Capitalism.

  17. Key contextual terminology Colonialism A rich country acquiring control over another poorer country and its borders, occupying it with settlers who exploit it economically (stealing valuable resources) and intimidate the local people with military force. In the past, powerful countries that were colonizing poorer countries or regions often forced the people from the poorer countries to work as slaves.

  18. Key contextual terminology- 3-2-1! Task: Find quotations from the novel that explore the idea of: Capitalism (3 quotations) Materialism (2 quotations) Colonialism (1 quotation) Extend yourself by: Then mind mapping/listing different areas in the book where these ideas are apparent.

  19. Key contextual terminology Task: Find examples of Capitalism/ Materialism and Colonialism in the extract. Then: Imagine this question came up in the exam ‘Examine the ways in which the corruption of Capitalist society is shown the extract.’ What 3 quotations would you select to analyse?

  20. We will now explore the rise of women in the 1930s! As we watch the videos, make notes (how ever you like!) on the A3 sheet about women in the 1930s.

  21. Mock exam • Complete the mock exam on your extract. Do this in silence- I will be taking these in and giving you feedback next week. • This is the best way to practise!

  22. Plenary- peer assessment • See how well your partner has answered your question! Put them in a band using the criteria on your sheet. Band 6- Excellent Band 5- Developed Band 4- Competent Band 3- Some Band 2- Limited Band 1- Little or none Band 0- No work.
