Memoir Unit. AVID Winter 2013. What is a memoir?. Memoir  is a  literary nonfiction  genre. Memoir comes from the Latin word for memory It is a collection of memories, both public or private, that took place in the author's life. The author of a memoir may be referred to as a  memoirist .

  2. What is a memoir? • Memoir is a literarynonfiction genre. • Memoir comes from the Latin word for memory • It is a collection of memories, both public or private, that took place in the author's life. • The author of a memoir may be referred to as a memoirist.

What Makes a Memoir? • Memoirs are written from the first-person point of view. • An autobiography tells the story of a whole life, while memoir tells a story from a life, such as major events or turning points from the author's life. • Memoirs focus on one or two major events that shape the author’s life. • Memoirs include the story of the event and the consequences or effect the event had on the author’s life.

Lifeline Activity You will create a lifeline in order to help you find key events in your life. • Go to Ms. Holicky’s teacher page and download the instructions. • Follow the instructions to create your own lifeline. • Try to pick out meaningful events in your life. • Don’t put anything too personal that you wouldn’t want to share with a neighbor
