A Proven Record of Success 1998-2007 Educational Excellence • Achieved Carnegie Research Extensive status • Improved quality • Improved ACT scores from 21.2 to 24.3 • Increased graduation rate from 33.2% to 43.6% • Increased retention rate from 72.1% to 78.2% • Increased endowed chairs from 54 in 1999 to 125 in 2007 • Increased PhD recipients from 76 in 1999 to 144 in 2006 • Achieved national recognition • Wall Street Journal survey named UofL one of the top 30 feeder schools to nation’s top graduate schools • Record number of student awards (Fulbright, Goldwater, etc.) • 30 nationally recognized programs in 2007

A Proven Record of Success 1998-2007 Research and Development • Fastest growing research university in the nation • Total research grew from $28.9 million in 1999 to $101 million in 2007 • Federal research grew from $15 million in 1999 to $80.4 million in 2007 • Translational research improving people’s lives • Cancer • More than 15 new cancer drugs under development – top 5 in the country • Nationally sponsored research funding grew from $300,000 in 1999 to $44 million in 2007 • Cancer capital campaign topped its $60 million, five-year goal in only 18 months; campaign continues

Educational Excellence • UofL commits to the “double the numbers” plan: • Increasing the number of baccalaureate degrees awarded each year from 2,328 in 2007 to 3,074 • Improving 6-year graduation rate from 44% in 2007 to 60.4% • Increasing first-year retention rate from 77.9% to 80.3% • Increasing the number of transfer students from 1,249 to 1,730/year

Educational Excellence • UofL will improve the learning environment and promote student success by: • Growing its faculty by 373 by 2020 • Improving the student/tenure-track faculty ratio from 21.4 -1 to 15-1 • Increasing percentage of on-campus students from 20% to 35% • Offering PhDs in 23 new areas, such as bioethics, neurosciences, justice administration, meteorology (UPS) • Increasing PhD graduates from 144 to 350 • Accomplishing all 14 goals set in 2007 Ideas to Action plan

Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity • UofL will grow its research and service missions by: • Adding 60 new investigators and 30 new scholars in the next five years • Growing research from $115 million to $400 million • Leading transformation of community/regional economy • $20.5 million DOE workforce grant • Haymarket/HSC development ($2.2 billion) • Shelby Campus research park • Cultural/artistic driver • Museum Plaza • Fine Arts growth

Finishing the Job 3.Community Engagement • UofL will continue and expand its faculty and student presence in the community by: • Being designated a Carnegie “Community Engagement” institution • Being designated a Carnegie “Curricular Engagement” institution • Founding the Center for Urban Solutions to address issues in cities around the state.

Diversity, Opportunity and Social Justice • The university will continue to lead the state in areas of diversity, opportunity and social justice by: • Expanding Cardinal Covenant from $500,000 in 2007 to $3.1 million in 2020 • Increasing need-based and transfer aid by $5.97 million by 2020 • Continuing to lead the state in Kentucky Plan success • (8 for 8 in 05, 06, 07)

Accountability • Increase endowment to $2 billion by 2020 • Attain designation as Top 20 Metropolitan Research University • Improve Sustainable Endowment Institute rating to A • (Currently a C+) • Lower space deficit from 645,000 sq.ft. to 0 sq.ft. • Fully utilize underperforming assets – Shelby Campus • Adopt NASULGC voluntary system of accountability

  20. Finishing the Job Ours is an ambitious plan that will require regular, significant investment from the university and from the Commonwealth. Over and above the CPE funding request, the needs are: FY09 $16.5m in GF appropriation FY10 Another $12.8m in GF appropriation Assuming 9% tuition increase
