  1. Achbar and his donkeys Substitution egyptian style! Enter here if you dare.. Courtesy of: www.eyelid.co.uk

  2. Achbar and his donkeys Achbar is renting some donkeys for his transportation company, he is no good with figures and needs your help as an administrator to make sure he can afford to rent them whilst making enough money to feed his family. Use the notes he has given you to work out his finances. Good luck! Information sheet x2

  3. Egyptian numbers

  4. Rent and income Rent: 30 donkeys @ 200 deben per month per donkey Rent = 200 deben per donkey r = 200d r = 200 × 30 r = 6000 deben Income: 30 donkeys work for 16 days at 20 deben per day Income = 20 debens × donkeys × working days i = 20dw i = 20 × 30 × 16 i = 9600 deben Profit before feeding and medication = income – rent p = i – r p = 9600 – 6000 p = 3600 deben

  5. Feeding and medication 30 days of feed per donkey: 2 deben on off days 4 deben on work days. Food cost = 30 donkeys (2 × off days + 4 × work days) d = 30 (2o + 4w) d = 30 (2 ×14 + 4 × 16) d = 30 (28 + 64) d = 30 × 92 d = 2760 deben per month Average visits by the doctor = 3+1+4+6+1 = 15 = 3 days 5 5 Doctors cost = 150 deben per visit d = 150v d = 150 × 3 d = 450 deben

  6. Monthly profit for achbar Achbars profit = Profit after rent – feeding costs – medicinal costs Achbars profit = 3600 – 2760 – 450 Achbars profit = 390 deben Oh no! Achbar needs to make at least 1000 deben a month to keep his family! How many days must the donkeys work? Remember: rent is monthly so it stays the same and so does the number of doctors visits!

  7. The answer • One extra day would be 600 deben ( 30 × 20) • The food for that day would go up by 2 debens per donkey so 30 × 2 = 60 (they get twice as much food on a working day) • An extra day would give us 600 – 60 = 540 deben • 540 + 390 = 930 deben – that still isn’t enough! • 2 extra days would give us 2 x 540 = 1080 deben. • 1080 + 390 = 1470 deben • Two extra days gives Achbar enough deben so the donkeys need to work for: 16+2 = 18 days • The donkeys need to work for 18 days per month.
