  3. 5 Themes of Geography • Movement: How and why are places connected? • Region: What binds a place together? • Human Environment Interaction: What is the relationship between the people and the environment? • Location: Where is it located? • Place: What is it like there?

  4. Movement • How transportation and communications systems link people in one location to those in another • Roads, railroads, airports… • Ex: A river makes possible a hydroelectric power plant, which generates electricity for the town.

  5. Region • An area of the Earth that has one or more common factors throughout. • Human factors may include language or government • Physical factors may include mountains, climate, or vegetation

  6. Human Environment Interaction • The ways people respond to and modify the natural environment • People adapt the way they live to suit their physical surroundings • People change their surroundings to meet their particular needs

  7. Location Where something is: Absolute- exact area/spot Example- 4103 E. Mockingbird Ln. Victoria, TX 77904 Relative- relation to another place Example- on the corner of Zac Lentz Pkwy (the Loop) and E. Mockingbird Ln.

  8. Place • Physical and cultural features that give a location its particular identity • Location + characteristics = Place • Physical environment and human characteristics of a location make it different than any other place on Earth
