  2. 1. The preterite tense is used to talk about actions that began and ended at a definite time in the past. To form the root for the preterite, drop the infinitive ending of the verb and add the appropriate endings to this root.

  3. -ar endings hablar- to speak habléhablamos hablaste ------ hablóhablaron Accents on yo and él/ella/Ud.

  4. 3. -er/-ir endings Comer-to eat vivir- to live Comícomimosvivívivimos Comiste ----- viviste----- Comiócomieronvivióvivieron • Accents on yo and él/ella/Ud.

  5. 4. Dar and ver have similarities in the preterite tense. Dar-to give Ver- to see Didimos vivimos Diste ------ viste ------ Diodieronviovieron • No accents!

  6. 5. Remember the spelling changes in the yo form with verbs that end in: -zar C -gar gu -car qu

  10. Direct Object Pronouns: lo,la, los y las • 1. The direct object is the word in the sentence that receives the action of the verb. The direct object can replaced by a direct object pronoun. The direct object answers the question “who or what.”

  11. Ex. Ella compró el bañador. • Bought what? El bañador is the direct object. • Ex. ¿Invitaste a Elena? • Invited who? Elena is the direct object.

  12. 2. Lo, la, los and lasare direct object pronouns that are used to replace nouns. They must agree with the noun they replace. They can replace either a person or a thing. The direct object pronoun goes right before the conjugated verb.

  13. {Direct Object} • Ex. Ex. Ella compró (el bañador). • Bought what? El bañador is the direct object. • Ella locompró.

  14. {Direct Object} • Ex. ¿Invitaste (a Elena)? • Invited who? Elena is the direct object. • ¿Lainvitaste?
