Revising TAA50104 Diploma of Training and Assessment Qualification purpose: It specifies the competencies required to engage in advanced training and assessment practice which may also include competence in one or more of the following areas: • development of training products • provision of training advisory and consultancy services • leadership and coordination of training and assessment services

Revising TAA50104 Diploma of Training and Assessment • Current qualification requires completion of 12 units packaged as 5 core and 7 elective units • Only one or at most two of the core units can be seen as relating to the advanced trainer and assessor • This packaging requirement implies meeting a diversity of needs rather than providing an unambiguous advanced training and assessment qualification

Revising TAA50104 Diploma of Training and Assessment Research (Guthrie, 2006) categorises nine fields of skills and knowledge for the VET practitioner: • Teaching, learning and assessment • Program and resource development • Strategic enquiry • Technology • Business and client focus • Vocational expertise and industry currency • VET system knowledge • Personal skills and attributes • Leadership and management

Revising TAA50104 Diploma of Training and Assessment • 135 training providers registered to deliver the current diploma • 885 (publicly funded) enrolments in 2009-compared to nearly 29,000 in TAA40104 • Some providers argued: that the current diploma is not broad or deep enough to meet the needs of advanced practitioners or to provide a newcomer with the TAA40104 with high level skills and knowledge

Revising TAA50104 Diploma of Training and Assessment • The Victorian Diploma of Vocational Education and Training Practice competes directly with the TAA50104 • An average of 350 enrolments per year between 2007 and 2009 inclusive • Main differences are: • 7 core and 4 elective units (most units are from TAA50104) • 2 state accredited units-Innovation in Education and Training and Facilitate learning in complex environments • Candidates must complete 50 hours of direct supervision and another 150 hours of professional practice

Revising TAA50104 Diploma of Training and Assessment • The TAE40110 comprises 10 units (7 core and 3 elective) compared with the TAA40104 14 units (12 core and 2 elective) • 3 Diploma level units have been included as electives in TAE40110: • TAAASS501A Design and develop assessment tools • TAEDEL501A Facilitate e-learning • TAESUS501A Identify sustainability skills within training packages and accredited courses

Revising TAA50104 Diploma of Training and Assessment • A possible model to provide advanced skill development for the VET practitioner • 4 core and 4 elective units • Core units to comprise: • Maintain and enhance professional practice (revise current unit) • Develop innovative products and services (new unit) • Develop and apply educational research skills (new unit) • Engage with industry/community (new unit)

  9. Revising TAA50104 Diploma of Training and Assessment • 4 elective units arranged as skill streams • Some examples of skill streams: • Skill Stream 1 – Advanced Assessment • Skill Stream 2 – Advanced Facilitation • Skill Stream 3 – Learning Design • Skill Stream 4 – Educational Leadership • Each stream to consist of 3 units with an additional unit to be chosen from elsewhere • Skill Streams could be added to over time
