This meeting addressed the differences between simulated and real hourly dispatch resource adequacy within the BPA (Bonneville Power Administration) Balancing Area. Key observations highlighted include the substantial month-to-month variability in thermal dispatch, challenges in making direct comparisons, and insights into seasonal patterns of thermal resource utilization. The findings suggest that simulated dispatch closely mirrors actual operations, particularly regarding winter base loading, summer peaking, and displacement of resources during June.

Simulated vs. RealHourly DispatchResource Adequacy ForumTechnical Committee MeetingOctober 1, 2010
A Few Observations • Thermal dispatch is situational and can vary substantially by month • Difficult to make direct comparisons • Could conclude that thermal is base loaded in winter, displaced in June, and used for peaking in summer • Overall there doesn’t appear to be anything in the simulated dispatch that stands out as being non-representative of real operations
