  21. CSU Admissions Eligibility • No change to admissions eligibility • High school graduation • A-G completion • Eligibility index • 1/3 of CSU campuses admit freshman applicants based only on CSU eligibility • We encourage all students to take SAT or ACT

  22. Campus Impaction • Campus Impaction: A campus receives more eligible applications in the initial filing period than there are enrollment spaces available for the class level (freshman or upper division transfer). • Campuses fall into 3 categories: • Admit using CSU eligibility • Campus impaction (freshman/transfer) • Impacted in all programs (all majors)

  23. Program/Major Impaction • Program Impaction: A campus receives more eligible applications for a specific undergraduate program in the initial filing period than there are enrollment spaces available. • Most campuses have at least one impacted major/program • Typically impacted at upper-division level • Students must meet criteria such as GPA in specific core/major prep courses, cumulative GPA, or a combination of factors

  24. CSU Eligibility vs. Selection All students who meet CSU entrance requirements are eligible to apply for admission. Other campuses are not impacted for general admission, but are impacted for specific majors. Also, due to the budget situation, there might be more impacted campuses every year.

  25. Eligibility vs. Selection • All students who meet UC or CSU entrance requirements are eligible to apply for admission. • From the pool of eligible applicants, campuses selectthe students they accept for admission. • Non-impacted campuses accept all eligible students: Bakersfield Monterey Bay Channel Islands Stanislaus Dominguez Hills UC Merced East Bay Northridge – (Local Maritime Academy Service Area Guarantee)

  26. How to apply to UC and CSU? University of California • Application website opens August 1st of the 12th grade year • Online applications can be submitted November 1st to 30th of 12th grade • Cost to apply - $70 per campus as of 2013 • Where to apply? www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply Cal State University • Application website opens August1st • Online applications can be submitted October 1 to November 30th of the 12th grade year • Cost to apply - $55 per campus as of 2013 • Where to apply? www.csumentor.edu

  27. Private Colleges & Universities • Have varying requirements & application deadlines • Most require counselor/teacher recommendations • Contact the campus online for specific information or www.commonapp.org californiacolleges.edu

  28. Private College Admissions Requirements are similar to UC/CSU, but also require: • Letters of Recommendations from teachers and counselors • Secondary School Reports • Mid-Year Reports

  29. Letters of Recommendation • Only Private Colleges accept Letters of Recommendation • UC/CSU does not accept Letters of Recommendation • Must be requested from the teacher or counselor • A three week notification prior to the deadline for admission is appreciated • Remember that your teacher/counselor does not write letters during winter break

  30. Helpful Strategy; Apply to: • A few schools that are a “reach” per your GPA and SAT scores • The majority of your schools should have their average GPA and SAT of admitted students be in your range • Apply to one or two “back up” schools, such as an un-impacted CSU or UC

  31. Private Colleges -How to apply? www.commonapp.org • Once the student opens a Common App account, the counselor and teachers can submit and attach their letters of recommendation to the student application • If a college does not use Common App, you can apply directly on its website

  32. Summary of Tasks • Take SAT and ACT spring of 11th grade • Visit colleges in the spring and summer • Conclude SAT/ACT testing no later than December of the 12th grade year • Request recommendation letters (if needed) in August and September • Complete and submit applications in October and November • Attend Financial Aid Night in December
