  2. Propaganda • An attempt to influence and individual so that he/she believes they are acting on their own decision. • Usually tries to appeal to the heart and not the mind. • Often portrays a false sense of reality or skews the information.

Why was Propaganda used in WWI? • The U.S. was concerned that the American public was not really supportive of the war because… • Wilson was elected on a platform of peace so that was what most people wanted. • Many people had no ties to Europe and did not care about the immigrants. • Feeling of “Isolationism” – wanted to isolate ourselves from the world’s problems.

  4. CPI – Committee on Public Information • Created by Wilson and was the 1st propaganda agency. • Headed by George Creel. • Made guidelines for the media to help pass the Espionage and Sedition Acts in order to gather support. • Flooded the movies, newspapers, academic, artists with pro-war.

  5. Focused on… • 1. Enlistment – getting men to join the army. • 2. Buying war bonds – money was used to support the war effort. • 3. Gaining support for the troops who were fighting the enemy. • 4. Promote the conservation of goods like leather, metal, food and fuel that could be sent to the troops.
