  3. FP7 – UK National Contact Points

  4. What is FP7UK? It is a group of National Contact Points (NCPs) funded by the Technology Strategy Board to provide advice and assistance to UK participants within specific areas of Framework Programme 7 (FP7). • Includes PPP support • All member states have NCPs FP7UK

  5. Cooperation Themes (Core Technology or End Market CR&D) Space Security Transport Food Agriculture Biotech Health Environment ICT NMP Energy

  6. FP7UK as a Delivery Mechanism for the TSB Knowledge Transfer Networks Collaborative research and development Knowledge Transfer Partnerships Micro and Nanotechnology Centres International Programmes FP7UK

  7. NCPs in the network of networks - Helping you to connect Enterprise Europe Networks - UK and Europe UK Knowledge Transfer Networks FP7UK NCPs from all other countries UK Regions & FP delivery services European Technology Platforms

  8. FP7 in General

  9. Business Development Drivers • Funding activities must be seen as a • Business Development Tool. • Engagement in activities that are value added – strategically and operationally if possible. • Assistance in helping to develop IP, products and people. • Partnering with strategic customers and end-users • Forming Supply Chain alliances • Funding is competitive. • So – The act of applying needs to be value added!

  10. Chapter 1 Cooperation (Core Technology or End Market CR&D) Space Security Transport Food Agriculture Biotech Health Environment ICT NMP Energy Large Projects Small Projects Support Actions Networks of Excellence

  11. Opportunities across themes – NMP, ICT, Health, etc Security Space Energy NMP ICT Transport Health Power Management Photovoltaics Technology Batteries Fuel Cells Aerospace Defence Oil & Gas Markets Health Comms

  12. Innovative Projects 50% support – more for an SME, Academic, etc The Commission give their fraction of what is spent Involving Partners from Multiple Countries At least 3 In Topics identified by The Commission’s Workprogramme In response to specific calls for Proposals By means of a Grant Agreement with The European Commission Funding Fundamentals

  13. NMP and the 2011 Call

  14. What NMP is about – Industrial Technologies NOT JUST NANO!! Improving industry competitiveness by developing, integrating and implementing high value-added technologies and processes: • Relevant to many sectors • Relevant to many technologies

  15. NMP covers 4 main areas in the work programme: NMP areas • Nanotechnology • Materials • New Production • Integration (with one or more elements of N, M or P, applying them to specific sectoral issues)

  16. Aerospace Electronics ICT Photonics Automotive Energy Manufacturing Textiles Biotechnology Environment Materials Transport Chemicals Forestry Nanotechnology Construction Health Oil & Gas Directly Relevant Sectors in NMP calls All these sectors have topics related to them in NMP Work Programmes:

  17. UK in the NMP calls • UK Industrial participation is at the same level as academia • More successful UK SMEs so far than in all of FP6. • UK grants in NMP call alone will be equivalent to that from a full UK CR&D call.

  18. How NMP Proposals are evaluated: Large, Small and SME projects are Collaborative Projects -organisations from at least 3 countries They (usually) have a 2-stage procedure – Stage 1 is a 10-page summary proposal for a quick yes/no Projects are marked on Technical Excellence, Impact and Project Management (stage 2 only)

  19. NMP - Example of Collaborative Projects • Small or medium-scale focused research projects • <4m€ Funding (Typically €2-3m, ~6-10 organisations) • Generally research focused with some end markets & applications • Largescale integrating collaborative projects, • >4m€ Funding (typically €6-8m, ~12-20 organisations) • Still pre-competitive research, but tying closer into end markets and applications. • Higher dissemination & training element • SMEcollaborative projects • Aimed at making SMEs research and knowledge-driven • >35% SME participation (no prescribed No. of participants) • SME drive (not necessarily the coordinator)

  20. NMP 2011 Call 5 Indicative Timescales & Details (2-stage): Call Publication ~30th July 2010 1st Stage Deadline ~4th Nov 2010 2nd Stage Deadline May 2011 There will be some variations to this – always read the detail! (i.e. PPP 2nd Dec, joint calls, etc)

  21. NMP 2011 (Call 5) Indicative Budgets: Small Projects ~€90m+ over 10 topics Large Projects ~€110m+ over 8 topics SME Projects ~€30m over 4 topics Coordinated Actions ~€11m over 5 topics ERANET ~ €8m over 4 topics Joint Calls ~€30.5m over 4 topics

  22. The PPPs and the 2011 Call

  23. What are the PPPs? • Public Private Partnerships • Re-focused FP7 money on three areas identified in the 2008 European Economic Recovery Package: • Factories of the Future (€600m from Commission) • Green Cars (€600m) • Energy Efficient Buildings (€500m) • They are NOT Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs)

  24. How are the PPPs to be implemented? • Budgets come from the different thematic area budgets • e.g. ‘Factories’ is 1/2 NMP, 1/2 ICT • This year Calls will be coordinated calls between the different themes, following normal FP7 rules. • After that – they may start to look more ‘JTI-like’ with more direct involvement of the European Technology Platforms.

  25. NMP in the 2010 PPP Call - Indicative • Opens ~30th July 10 • Closes ~2nd Dec 10 • Single stage call only (to speed it up in EC terms) • Project sizes this year • For example, In NMP: • ~€10m for ‘cars’- 1 call topic • ~€40m for ‘buildings – 4 call topics • ~€80m for ‘factories’- 6 call topics • Check Work Programme for details

  26. Help and Support

  27. Partnering and Networking: Many Options • The UK Knowledge Transfer Networks • The NCP networks • Enterprise Europe Networks • European Technology Platforms • Your own Supply Chain! Use them to fit your purpose as a business

  28. How FP7UK Can Help – making you a self-sufficient player • Helping you decide your strategy • The Work Programmes in Detail • Proposal positioning & links with the commission • Some partnering – links to NCPs from other countries • We encourage you to use KTNs & Regional support • The do’s and don’ts of applying
