  1. Physics Where you finally use all that math you learned.

  2. Why Scientific Notation? • We have big and small measurements to make. • EX: Distance of a Light Year = 9.46 x 1012 km • EX: Mass of an electron = 1.6 x 10-19 g

  3. Scientific Notation Consider the number 5 x 103 5 = Coefficient  The Main Number 10 = Base  Base 10 is the easiest system 3 = Exponent  The Tens Multiplier Proper Format = One number before decimal place

  4. Scientific Notation When the coefficient is made smaller, the exponent must be made larger. When the coefficient is made larger, the exponent must be made smaller.

  5. Scientific Notation Addition – Match the exponents ADD the coefficients. Subtraction –Match the exponents SUBTRACT the coefficients. Multiplication – ADD the exponents MULTIPLY the coefficients. Division – SUBTRACT the exponents DIVIDE the coefficients.

  6. Metric System & Conversions • Why use metric? • It is the easiest system, based on powers of 10 • It is the most widely used • Only the US, Liberia, and Myanmar us English units • The metric system uses prefixes on base measurements • Base measurements -> meters, seconds, grams, etc… • Prefixes include milli, centi, kilo, mega, etc…

  7. Algebra Techniques • PEMDAS (For simplifying one side of en equation) • Clear out fractions by MULTIPLYING every term by a repeating demoninator • ADD or SUBTRACT the same value from both sides • Divide every term by the same non-zero value • Combine Like Terms • Factoring or expanding • Apply a function to both sides (square roots, arcsins)

  8. Geometric Identities • All triangle angles add to 1800 • The hypotenuse is always the largest side • A2 + B2 = C2 • SOH CAH TOA • There are six total numbers (3 angles, 3 sides) • If one side is known and ANY other quantity, all others can be determined

  9. Geometry Strategies • Pick an angle and determine Hyp, Opp & Adj • Pick a Trig function that has only one unknown • Plug in the numbers, and solve the function like an algebraic equation • Use inverse functions if the angle that is unknown
