  9. The Improbable • How do you view the improbable? • How do you define the improbable? • How does God see the improbable? • How are we to pray for the improbable? • What of Stephen’s widows?

  10. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. 11. Jesus’ Improbables Tax Collectors Lower Class Prostitutes Adulterers Roman Soldiers Samaritans

  12. Jesus’ Improbables • Whom did Jesus view as “improbables?” • There were exceptions on both sides: • Not every sinner repented. • Not every Pharisee rejected. • Prodigal Sons (and Daughters) • Jesus is the expectant Father, constantly looking out the window for His wayward son.

  13. Contemporary Indignation • Hard question: • Would we approve of Jesus’ ministry today? • Seriously, where do you think you’d find Him? • With whom would He spend his time?

  14. On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” MARK 2:17

  17. Perfectly Prepared Had the ideal background to uniquely and powerfully serve Christ. Had no safe harbor on earth. Had to depend fully on The Lord. Was willing to accept suffering…not as penance, but as an honor unto God.

  18. Applying Improbability What borders and boundaries have we created to the improbable among us? How could we reach out, impact, or inspire the improbable? What impact could the improbable otherwise have on this broken world?
