  1. 10th November 2011 Trade Unions Lesson Intentions In this unit we are going to; -Assess the purpose of trade unions. -Why people join unions -The benefits these unions provide.

  2. What are Trade Unions? • Unions are organisations that represent the interests of people who work. • Unions are specific to a certain trade / trades

  3. There are many different Unions in the UK today. • There are even different Unions for the same job • However, Unions can work together

  4. A large number of unions join the TUC – Trade Union Congress • The TUC is a federation of 58 unions • It acts as a council and meets ever year to make decisions at its Annual Congress Trade Union Congress The TUC wants the government to rethink the cuts which it says will hit families with children

  5. What does a Trade Union do? • You have 3 minutes to brain storm with your partner. • Write down as many things as you can think off.

  6. What does a Trade Union do? • Aims to provide better working conditions for employees. • Paid holidays • National minimum wage • Sick pay • Maternity leave • Flexible working arrangements for working parents • Health and Safety • Solving disputes • Equal rights • Redundancy arrangements Copy these down!

  7. Tasks • Everyone write the title “Trade Unions” • Use page 86 to complete a spider diagram which shows; • “Reasons for joining a Trade Union”, include as much detail as you can. • “Reasons for not joining a Trade Union”, include as much detail as you can. • G/C – Read pages 95-96, complete all of the Activities on both pages. • G/F – Read pages 85-87, complete question 1-11 on page 87.
