  1. Measurement Includes 2 parts: • Number (ex. 1, 2, 3, 4) • Unit (ex. cm, mg, kL) Ex. 8 cm, 22 mg, 14.35 kL

  2. Prefixes: come before a word • Centi- centimeter (cm) 1/100 Century (100 years) • Milli- milligram (mg) 1/1000 Millennium (1000 years) • Kilo- kiloliter (kL)x 1000 1000x larger

  3. The Metric System

  4. Length • Meter (m): basic unit for length • Meter Stick: tool used to measure length

  5. Meter Stick

  6. Mass • amount of matter (stuff) in an object • Kilogram (kg) – basic unit of mass • Balance - tool used to measure mass

  7. Volume: • amount of space an object takes up • Liter (L) – basic unit of volume • Graduated cylinder – tool used to measure liquid volume

  8. Meniscus - bottom curve of water line (in a graduated cylinder) • Cubic centimeter - cm3 = mL (length x width x height)

  9. Temperature • Celsius – metric measurement for temperature • Thermometer – tool used to measure temperature

  10. Examples - Boiling Temp. 100 oC - Freezing Temp. 0 oC - Body Temp. 37 oC - Room Temp. 26 oC

  11. Conversion Factor • a fraction that always equals “1” Length 1 m = 1000 mm 1 m = 100 cm 1000 m = 1 Km 1 cm = 10 mm

  12. 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? ________cm HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals. Measuring Length How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? Ruler: http://www.k12math.com/math-concepts/measurement/ruler-cm.jpg

  13. Conversion Factor Volume 1 L = 1000 mL 1 L = 100 cL 1000 L = 1 KL 1 cL = 10 mL

  14. Conversion Factor Mass 1 g = 1000 mg 1 g = 100 cg 1000 g = 1 Kg 1 cg = 10 mg

  15. What are some tools used for measurement? Measurement/Metric System 1. Meter Stick 2. Balance 3. Grad. Cylinder 4. Thermometer • Identify 3 prefixes. * Centi- * Milli- * Kilo- What are 4 types of measurement? 1. Length 2. Mass 3. Volume 4. Temperature What are the 2 parts of a measurement? - Number and Unit

  16. Dimensional Analysis • a skill of converting one unit to another The length of a student’s pencil is 5.4 cm. What is this measurement in mm?

  17. Given: 5.4 cm Solve: How many mm? Conversion Factor: Work:

  18. The longest loaf of bread on record was 1256 feet, 2 inches long. If this bread had been cut into ½ (0.5) inch slices, how many slices of bread would there have been?

  19. There are 115 calories in 4 ounces of baked potato. How many pounds of baked potatoes would a person have to eat in order to take in 2990 calories?

  20. At sea level, water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. At the top of Mt. Everest, 29002 feet, water boils at 159.8 degrees F. How many degrees does the boiling point drop for every mile up from sea level to the top of Mt. Everest: (hint: change feet to miles. Find the difference of temperatures).
