  1. Andrew Goodwin- music video conventions-a theory By Immy Murphy

  2. Common features found in the music videos • There is usually a link between the lyrics and the visuals. • Usually, a link between the music and the visuals. • Most music videos usually rreflect the common features of the genre of music. • . Use of intertextual references. • . Notions of looking and voyeurism  • . Demands of the record label evident e.g., budget etc. •  . Star image a key focus. •  . Performance based, Narrative based, and/or concept based   • Visuals reflect lyrics either metaphorically, symbolically or literally

  3. Reflections of the record label… • Could reflect issues such as the record label’s • . Financial status  • . power / connections.  • . Other signed artists.  • . Global location. •  . Target audience.

  4. Taylor swifts' video- you belong with me-mis en scene • Setting/Location • . In this music video there is more than one setting/location. - one being in the boy and girls separate bedrooms and they are talking across through writing on paper. The second location is outside of both their houses on the grass. Then the third is on the sports ground of their high school, and then the final location is the boy and girl at prom. • Costume- • . Most of the outfits/costume in this music video are simple, however there are a few different outfits throughout the music video. • For example- at the beginning the boy and girl are in their casual teen pyjamas. • However, we can really the contrasting characters through the outfits the boy and girl are wearing, the boy is wearing very casual, plain and trendy pjs which shows his popular character, whereas Taylor Swift who is playing the girl is wearing long pyjamas with a top that says ‘Junior Jewels’ in which lots of people have signed, with glasses and messy hair; therefore, she gives off a geekier vibe. • . The second outfit shown is when the main boy and girl are sitting on a bench and he is wearing a casual trendy tee shirt with denim jeans, and he looks stylish. In contrast she is wearing an old lady blouse, with a grey unstylish thin cardigan over the blouse. • . Again, the outfits change., to the boy being in his soccer outfit whilst on the pitch, and the girl is in the band with her blocky blue band attire on, which is very untrendy. • . Then the final costume is both the boy and girl at prom in which the boy is wearing the classic tux, and the girls’ whole style has changed, and she looks like a different person, she is wearing a gorgeous strapless white fitted prom dress. This changes her whole appearance from being a geeky girl, to a more popular pretty high school teen.

  5. You belong with me- mis en scene slide 2 • Makeup- • There is little makeup worn in this music video, until it gets to prom in which she is wearing a face of makeup, as she is obviously all glammed up. • Lighting- • In the beginning it’s a darker light as it is night-time, and they just have their side lights on. • . It then changes to a natural, bright light as they are outside on a bench. • . Then it changes to a bright white light as they are on a sport playing field. • . Then in the final scene where they are in a bluer lighting and its darker, to set the more prom like mood.

  6. Camera work in the music video you belong with me. • Camera work • . There is an establishing shot at the beginning, of the houses to set the scene. • . There is an over the shoulder shot over the boy’s shoulder, looking into the girl’s window. To show their relationship, and how they live next door to each other. • . There is a close up of the girl through her window. • . There is a wide shot of the girl (Taylor swift) dancing to the music in her bedroom. • Series of over the shoulder shots, when the girl is dancing Infront of mirror and changing outfits, it shows the girls point of view also. • Mid shot of the two teens talking. • Over the shoulder, in slow mo, when boys tucks the girl's hair behind her ear. This implies the sub context of the love story. • Close up in chorus when she is singing her heart out to him. • Wide shot, for when she walks into the prom, this draws the attention to her.

  7. Editing- in the music video you belong with me • There wasn’t a lot of editing in this music videos, however there were lots of cross cuts from one location to the next. • Throughout the whole music videos, we see 4 different locations, and this is transitioned smoothly using cross cutting. • There was also cut shots, in which the shot ended, and then reopened with another, this happened from when the girl was looking out her window, then the shot cut and instantly changed to her in her bedroom. • It opens with an establishing shot of the girls and boys house opposite each other.

  8. Soundtrack- • Overall, the lyrics to the song go very well with the music. • As in the song, Taylor swift, is singing about how someone belongs with her, and she is doing comparisons between the popular kids and the geeky nerdy kids, and this is portrayed in the music video. • The pace of the music also works with how the music video goes. For example, with the chorus being more upbeat and loud, we find Taylor swift dancing and singing, rather than being sad in the other scenes. • It is a narrative based music video • The lyrics reflect the music video literally.
