Course Description: • British Literature is devoted to the study of the written and oral traditions emanatinating from the British Isles that have come to shape the world and its cultures as we know it. This semester long class will cover fabled authors such as Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. • We shall delve into poetry with extensive analysis of Metaphysical, Romantic and Victorian Poets. • Our journey will continue into the Modern era by studying the works of such authors as Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce. George Bernard Shaw and Aldus Huxley await us in societal literature

Methodology/ Course Ambitions • In preparation for college, lecture and rigorous discussion will be utilized along with various media presentations created to supplement the reading that each student is assigned. • The ambitions for this class are simple: • -to read good literature with a critical, objective mind • -to discuss literature we have read in collegiate atmosphere with respect to others’ opinions • -to write about the literature in an erudite fashion with attention to analysis, opinion and style.

Texts/Materials • Textbooks: The Language Of Literature: British Literature • Vocabulary Workshop: Level G (Sadlier-Oxford) • Novels/Plays: • Pride and Prejudice-(Jane Austen)summer reading • Crime and Punishment –(Fyodor Dostoevsky summer reading • DUBLINERS- (James Joyce) • Christmas Carol-(Charles Dickens) • English Romantic Poetry: An Anthology Dover Thrift Editions • The Good Soldier (Ford Maddox Ford) • Six Great Sherlock Holmes Stories- (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

  5. Evaluation Methods • Students will be evaluated through oral response to literature read in class, multiple-choice, short-response and essay tests as well as academic essays and various writing assignments. • Keeping with the English Department guidelines, the grades will be calculated as follows • 25% Participation • 25% Homework • 25% Quizzes • 25% Tests • This will be maintained for both quarters and projects will be designated based on assignment requirements.

  6. Classroom procedures/rules • Students are to arrive promptly to class, dressed according to code and prepared for work with pen, notebook and text (or novel) everyday. • Students must sit in assigned seats. • No eating, drinking or gum chewing in the classroom. • Respect the right of your classmates to voice an opinion. There shall be no shouting down, harassment or ridicule in the classroom. Always raise your hand when wishing to speak in class. • Refrain from language that vulgar or insulting. • Cheating will not be tolerated. This includes copying of homework. • Remember Matthew 25:40 "The King will answer them, 'Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'
