Introduction Source:http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/design/smartphone-invasion-changed-our-lives/ • The presence of smartphone is constantly increasing in the society • More than one billion people around the world use smartphone • However, there is enough research that smartphone usage has addictive behaviors • A survey on smartphone usage by Ofcom showed that a 60% of teenagers and 37% adults have admitted to be addicted

  4. Research Objective Gain a deep understanding to smartphone usage with regard to: • How is smartphone used for activities related to entertainment? • What impact smartphone has on daily lives of its users? • What are the changing trends in smartphone usage?

Smartphone Background • Smartphone is built on mobile operating system that enables computing capability along with mobile features • The first smartphone appeared in 1993 from IBM Simon but Apple’s iPhone revolutionized the market in 2007 • Features of smartphone: portable media players, digital cameras, GPS navigation units, WiFi connectivity and other realted features

  7. Methodology (1/3) Literature review Theoretical frameworks • Media systems dependency theory Online survey conducted in February and March 2013 Survey considerations: • Students from Aalto University (Age 20-30) • Questions on smartphone dependency Qualitative analysis

Methodology (2/3) Media systems dependency theory “the more a person depends on media to meet needs, the more important media will be in a person's life, and therefore the more effects media will have on a person” People tend towards media: • “The need to understand one's social world” • “ The need to act meaningfully and effectively in that world” • “ The need to escape from that world when tensions are high”

Methodology (3/3) Online responses were divided into four categories: Addicts • Users with average dependency rate as 8 and above • No success in reducing smartphone usage Followers • Average dependency rate is between 6 and 7 • Spend more time than intended Regulars • Average dependency rate is 3 and 5 • Easy to replace smartphone with a feature phone Moderates • Average dependency rate is 2 and below • No time spent on games and videos

Conclusion The more a person depends on media, the more effects media will have on the person People with addictive usage behavior indicated to spend more time and feel anxious of their smartphone usage 63% of respondents informed to have increased smartphone usage from their previous year 70% of Moderates find it easy to replace smartphone with feature phone People use media when there is a need to escape from their tensions More than 75% respondents in category of addicts and followers admitted to use smartphone when they are bored or lonely People use media when there is a need to understand their social world and act effectively Social networking is one of the reason people use their smartphone the most Nearly 50% respondents informed to check smartphone for every one hour Contrary to the claim by many sources, people spend less time on videos and games

  15. Future Work Is smartphone becoming more suitable for activities that involve less effort and time? Is it ubiquitous connectivity of smartphone or the applications that attract people? Is the addiction mainly from smartphone usage or through internet addiction?
