  4. Morning Arrival Guidelines • Students may arrive at school at 7:20 am • Any student wanting to purchase breakfast may proceed to cafeteria at 7:20 am • 6th graders gather in the large gym from 7:20 am - 7:40 am • At 7:40 students may go to their lockers and head their Mod 1 class • Mod 1 begins PROMPTLY at 7:50

  5. Drop Off Guidelines Traveling south on Patrick Henry – The block between the two driveways is a no parking zone between 7:00AM to 8:00 AM, as this area is used for student drop-off during that time period. If you turn into the lot, please pull forward to make room for cars behind you. Traveling north on Patrick Henry -the block between the main entrance for Westover Baptist Church and the crosswalk is a no parking zone from 7:00AM to 8:00AM, as it will also be used for student drop-off.

  7. TDAP VACCINE DEADLINEDue by Friday, 9/2/11 • Virginia Law requires all 6th grade students to have tetanus, diphteria and pertussis (Tdap) booster vaccine prior to entry into middle school.  • Please bring or fax (703-536-2775) your child's vaccination record to the clinic by Friday, 9/2/10.

TDAP VACCINE DEADLINEDue by Friday, 9/2/11 • The health department offers Tdap starting at age 9, free of charge to students in its open immunization clinic at:  2100 Washington Boulevard Tuesdays 3:00 – 6:30 p.m. Fridays   7:30 - 11:00 a.m. (Please bring your child’s immunization record) • Contact the school clinic at 703-228-5515 or 703-228-5514 or the School Health Office at 703-228-1650/51/53 with questions.

  9. Electronic Devices • Cell phones must be turned off and out of sight at all times during school day. If parents need to contact their child, they may do so by calling the Main Office at 703-228-5500. • Electronic devices (for example: I-pods, I-Touch, Kindle, video games, etc…) should not be brought to school. Swanson is not responsible for equipment lost, damaged or stolen. • Attendance Policy • Excuse notes must be turned in to the main office. • Special absence requests must be submitted in writing and approved in advance by the principal. • Notes for early dismissal requests (appointments, etc) must be given to main office the morning of request. Items to Note Homework • Students should record their daily homework assignments in their agenda book. • Teachers will post homework, via Blackboard, daily by 4:00 pm. • If a student is absent two or more days, parents can call the Homework Hotline at 703.228.2003 to request pick-up of assignments in the main office by 4:30 pm

Cafeteria Tips • Full breakfast available to everyone ($1.35 from 7:20 am-7:50 am) • Lunch costs $2.65, milk alone is $0.55 • Prepay lunch accounts online at http://www.myschoolbucks.com or by check payable to Swanson Middle School • Parents will be notified when students’ lunch account falls below $8.00

  13. Swanson Middle SchoolAfter School Activities Most clubs begin in late September and meet weekly or bimonthly. Students do not need to register for any club or activity. However, exceptions exist for clubs/activities where try-outs are required (i.e. annual school play) or where joining in the middle of a session would be disruptive. All clubs are supervised by adults; however, attendance is not taken and parents are not notified if the student is absent. After school activities begin at 2:30 and generally last for one hour. This one hour time period is called ASP1 (After School Period).

  14. After School Activities • ASP1 – 2:30-3:30 pm Homework Club Intramurals Clubs Sport Practices Teacher Sponsored Activities • ASP2 – 3:30-4:15 pm ASP2 is for bus riders only. Students in ASP2 will be provided with additional supervised activities.

  15. After School Activities • There are late buses, which leave school at 4:21 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. These buses are for bus riders who stay after school for clubs, sports, and supervised activities. They do not follow the regular routes, but transport students as close as possible to their regular stops. • For students who participate in sports, a sports bus is provided following sports events on game days only. This bus also drops students off as close as possible to their regular stops.

  16. Sport Physicals • Physicals must be completed after May 1 (of the previous school year) in order to participate in any sports activities (needed to try-out). They must be on file in the clinic office. • Physical forms are available in the clinic, main office, and on the Swanson website.
