  1. Federalist Paper # 51 Obee Period 2 AP Govt

  2. It is equally evident, that the members of each department should be as little dependent as possible on those of the others, for the emoluments annexed to their offices.

  3. “The interest of the man must be connected against the oppression of its rulers, but to guard one part of the society against the injustice of the other part.” – James Madison What does that mean???

  4. How James Madison thinks • He thinks we are all evil in our thoughts and would not be able to control ourselves without a form of government • He quote “ if men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.”

  5. Interest of citizens • Every citizens has different interest. If a maj0rity be united by a common interest, the rights of the minority will be unsecured. • The law will suit for the majority opinions of all citizens

  6. One & Two methods • There are two methods that works against “evil”. • 1st Method- creating a will in the community independent of the majority of the society • 2nd Method- comprehends the society in many descriptions of citizens

  7. Lookin’ Closer at the 1st Method • The first method prevails in all governments processing an hereditary or self-appointed authority • This is best but at a precarious security; because a power independent of the society may as well espouse the unjust views of the major, as the rightful interests of the minor party, and may possibly be turned against both parties

  8. Now lookin’ at the 2nd Method • The 2nd method is exemplified in the federal republic of the U.s. • All authority will be derived from and dependent on the society • The society itself will be broken in many parts, interest, and classes of our citizens, BUT the rights of one individual may be in danger from other interests of opinions .

  9. What I'm tryin’ to say is • Both cases, methods, will depend on the number of interests of the majority of the people in the society. • May depend on the extent of country and number of people that participate under the same government

  10. If you didn’t get that… The rights of an individual will be based on the interest of every citizens that is in the society and to make it equal for the MAJORITY of the citizens.
