Understanding Sustainable Development: Definitions, Models, and Historical Context

This lesson explores the concept of sustainable development as defined by the Bruntland Report (1987), emphasizing the need to meet current generations' needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet theirs. We examine various definitions, including economic development without resource depletion and a systems approach to growth. The lesson highlights the three pillars of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental. Additionally, we analyze challenges in achieving sustainable development and outline key historical events through a timeline. Students will investigate a city’s initiatives toward sustainability, supported by relevant data.
