Thematic Focus • Reduce gender gap by increasing Girls enrolment, retention and completion of primary cycle • Improve teaching and learning processes • Increase local/ district government-community participation and ownership • System strengthening through sector wide analysis, planning and capacity development

  4. Key project inputs • Recruitment of 683 local female teachers through Community Support Process. • Establishment of 316 new girls primary schools (80 CSP and 236 second shift). All Second Shift converted to First Shift through provision of Buildings • Supported training of 1800 PTSMCs and 850 WVECs • Between 2007-2010, Provision of small matching grants and school rehabilitation funds to 897 PTSMCs, ranging from Rs.50,000 to Rs.500,000. Total funds provided around 150 million Rupees • Supported 50 master trainers from renowned institutions, who later on trained 941 teachers in joyful learning and 3000 through Mentoring

  5. Key Project Inputs • Supported training of 675 newly recruited teachers in Mobile Female Teachers Training program.. Also training of all JET recruited in the upgraded middle schools is under process • Continuously supported school supplies and learning material to all girls’ schools and focused boys schools (1800). • Supported provision of water and sanitation facilities support to All girls schools (922) • Implementation and mobility support to District Education Offices (project teams, vehicles, equipments etc

  6. Impact analysis Access: • Girls schooling opportunities (new schools) increased by 100% in some and overall by 72% in four districts

Impact analysis Quality: • Teachers Students ratio balanced by 1:40 • Female teaching staff increased by 72% • Quality teaching and learning processes introduced/practiced through ECE, Joyful/Child friendly learning initiatives • Community support enhanced through matching grants for low cost school development initiatives Policy Support • 683 female teachers regularized in the system • 262 2nd shift schools initiated and institutionalized • Mentoring program in clusters initiated for female teachers (bringing the training down to school level)

Way Forward • Full District Wide Approach by focusing all primary schools and primary sections of both middle and High as well • Strategy development for phasing out of certain districts and phasing into at least 3 new districts based upon lowest education indicators • Third Party monitoring of all UNICEF project inputs • Mapping of out of school children in all project districts • Shifting weight from the Access leg to the Quality leg through Child Friendly Schools, especially at primary level – an umbrella framework of Quality Education • Early childhood Education, especially focusing Katchi class (comprises of around 40% enrolment of PE and around 60% dropout at PE level is recorded in Katchi class only)

Way Forward • The JETs recruited for 80 newly upgraded school under the project to be regularized in the government system with continued support to these schools • Professional capacity development of around 7500 primary teachers on curriculum contents particularly Maths & English and Child Friendly learning methodologies. • School Development through PTSMCs, including construction of school buildings, additional rooms and miner repairs • Water, Sanitation facilities and School health initiatives

Way Forward • School supplies and learning material to all girls and boys’ schools of project districts • Assessment of Learning Achievements through PEAS (class 4 & 8 assessment completed in all project districts, analysis and report is in progress). Development and testing of Standardized assessment tools for grade 5 & 8 • Strengthening and Institutionalization of District Education Management Information System (DEMIS) (already initiated and school census under the revised strategy is in progress in more than 3000 schools of project districts) • Strengthening Regular monitoring through project supported teams and active Education Field Officers • Gender Education Support Project Initiated through the Education Sector Policy and Planning Unit within the office of Secretary Education • Commitment to support the department of education developing “Education Sector Plan/strategy”
