It is a fact that India is still learning about the Accessible Tourism though its importance and requirement has been realized by the government and so they are keep trying to make every tourist destination barrier-free and disabled-friendly. There are few places which take care of special needs of tourists.

Introduction • It is a fact that India is still learning about the Accessible Tourism though its importance and requirement has been realized by the government and so they are keep trying to make every tourist destination barrier-free and disabled-friendly. There are few places which take care of special needs of tourists.

  5. Kerala • Kerala is one of the best places for tourism and it welcomes the disabled tourists for relaxed and comfortable stay. The Kochi Fort in Ernakulum, Kerala is declared as the first disabled-friendly heritage Site in India in year 2016. • This monument is designed with non-slippery tiles for easier movement of disabled travelers, senior citizens and people on wheel chairs. Tourists who posses hearing, visual, cognitive or mobility impairments can visit this place easily. • Not only Koch Fort, Kannaur district and Akkulum village are in process of developing it as barrier-free. Soon, Kerala will be the first tourist destination in India offering accessible tourism.

  6. Agra • Agra is the dotted with some magnificent architecture that will mesmerize you.  It is the right of every person to witness the charm and beauty of master piece, Taj Mahal. Therefore, you can find arrangements for disabled travelers who can use wheelchair for exploring the Taj Mahal. • People usually explore Agra during the Delhi Agra Jaipur Trip.  At Agra Fort, wheel chairs and golf carts are available for ferry. Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO Heritage Site also has provisions for special toilets, Braille sign boards, ramps, special ticket counters and parking.

  7. Delhi • In 2001, Stephen Hawking visited Delhi and wanted to explore the major attractions- Jantar Mantar, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutb Minar and Red Fort. At that time, temporary ramps were made to offer him access. Therefore, this city offers accessible tourism at some of the tourist places in Delhi. The best example is Delhi Metro where ramps, elevators and lifts are built at each metro station. Fir visually challenged people, buttons with Braille signs can be found. • Not only these, there are dedicated spot for wheelchairs at station. People on wheelchairs can explore Qutb Minar and can reach up to the Iron pillar. There are several hotels in Delhi, that offers disable friendly services and take care of tourists. Due to the arrival of most of the international flights in Delhi, the capital has become tourist hub and thus, foreign tourists book Golden Triangle Tour from Delhi to catch the glimpses of heritage, culture, traditions and historical architecture of India.

  9. Sanchi Stupa in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh • Sanchi Stupa is a UNESCO World Heritage located at Raisen district near the capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal. Here, the guides are trained to take care of special needs of tourists. A tactile pathway and information in Braille are available for assisting disabled tourists. Beeper and Braille maps are provided to tourists for guidance.

  10. Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace in Bangalore, Karnataka This is the first disabled-friendly monument in India that comes under surveillance of the Archaeological Survey of India. This attraction is crafted with a tactile pathway from main gate to toilet for visually impaired pedestrians. Also, Braille sign boards and Braille brochure are available to assist visually challenged people.

Lakshamana Temple in Chhattisgarh • Like the above attractions, this temple is also a barrier-free tourist attraction where a tactile pathway with Braille assistance is there for offering accessible tourism to disabled-tourists. • The aim of Indian government is to develop public places such as railway stations, airports, bus stands for the convenience of disabled-tourists. Also, several major tourist places are in a process of development for accessible tourism.

  12. Conclusion • There are numerous travel operators who design special tour packages to cater the special needs of disabled-tourists. We hope, soon, India becomes a barrier-free destination for everyone.
