  1. Encyclopedia Skills Encyclopedia : a work that contains information on all branches of knowledge or treats comprehensively a particular branch of knowledge usually in articles arranged alphabetically often by subject.

Encyclopedia Tools • Edition – What year the set was published • Volume – What number in the set, also what letters are covered in that volume. • Guide words – The words at the top of the page that tell you what articles are on that page. • Article – The information written about a certain topic

  3. Encyclopedia Tools • Pictures – photos of people, places, and events. • Picture captions – the words under a picture that tell you what the picture is about. • Maps – Show you different places and other information. • Diagrams – Show you how something works. • Charts and Tables – provide extra information.

  4. Research Guide and Index • This is a separate volume in the World Books. In some other sets they are at the back of each volume. • The Research Guide is designed to help answer questions about how to research information and how to write reports. • The index lists all of the sets topics in alphabetical order and tells you where to find the articles about those topics.
