Questions • Students should be risk aware and know how to avoid hazards and report them. • WHAT IS A HAZARD? • A hazard is anything that can cause harm (e.g. chemicals, electricity, bags left on a classroom floor). • WHAT IS A RISK? • A risk is the likelihood, high or low, that person(s) may be harmed by the hazard. • EXAMPLE • Take a look around the classroom –are there any bags in front of the door or between the desk aisles? If YES remove them, as they may hinder a swift exit in the event of an emergency evacuation. • If you see anything that may be a danger/hazard, what do you do? • If you witness, or are involved in, an accident or near miss, what should you do? • Where is the accident book kept? • What is an emergency arises in the evening or weekend during teaching? • Where are the first aid boxes kept? • Where is you nearest fire exit route? The Safe Learner Concept • NOTES TO TUTORS • Information to be passed to students: • Stay Safe concept • Explain the Student Intranet can be used for further H&S Information. • Explain/show fire evacuation procedures/escape routes/assembly points/times of weekly fire bell tests (Both every Wed 10am) • First aid information and procedures and accident and near-miss reporting procedures. • Personal protective equipment – if required during an activity or course. • Safe Studio/Classroom practice training if applicable) • COSHH (chemical use) procedures if applicable • Display Screen Equipment (if applicable) • Location and use of welfare facilities; toilets/canteen/drinking water. • If in any doubt about the relevance of the above information to your particular course please contact Monika Quayle 078951529860 or 020 8843 7963 for further information. • Please complete MOBILITY forms for any mobility impaired students • Please sign to say you have completed this Safe Learner Concept for College Records. Answers • If it is simple, put it right yourself. If it is more complicated report it to Reception/Caretakers to forward to the relevant person. • Call a First Aider/OR/Dial 999. report the accident or near-miss in an Accident form • available from your tutor or the Accident Books kept at Reception, Caretakers & Canteen. • Contact Reception, Caretakers or dial 999 • Reception, Caretakers, Canteen or most art studios. • Have a look on the way out of your class today to find your nearest exit route and remember it.   3. LSC Safe Learner Concept Personal Safety Information Personal Protective Equipment must always be worn by tutors and students. Safe studio practice training and information will be provided by your tutor, where and when applicable. Safe use of equipment, machines and processes training and information will be provided by your tutor, where and when applicable. Safe use of substances (COSHH) training, information and procedures will be provided by your tutor, where and when applicable. Display Screen Equipment procedures and information for safe use will be provided by your tutor, where and when applicable. A Health & Safety Guide For STUDENTS WELFARE FACILITIES Your tutor will inform you where: The toilets and showers are situated. Where drinks and snack machines are situated. Where the canteen is situated. Where the fresh water drink machines are situated. For use in conjunction with the LSC’s Safe Learner Concept Please read and answer questions that will be asked by your tutor.   4. STAY SAFE! In the event of an evacuation do not re-enter the building until it has been cleared by the Officer in Charge. Fire Bell tests are conducted EVERY WEDNESDAY at 10.30am. As a student at RACC you should be risk aware and know how to avoid hazards and how to report them. WHAT IS A HAZARD? A hazard is anything that can cause harm (e.g. chemicals, electricity, bags left on a classroom floor). WHAT IS A RISK? A risk is the likelihood, high or low, that person(s) will be harmed by the hazard. FOR EXAMPLE… Look around the classroom – are there any bags in front of the door or between the desk aisles that anyone might trip over, or might prevent a quick exit in the event of an emergency). If YES – remove them. FIRST AID Both college centres have first aid rooms. First aid boxes are kept at Reception, Caretakers Office, Canteen and most art studios. You can find a first aider via Reception, Caretakers Office and the Canteen. There are lists of all trained first aiders in these locations. ACCIDENTS If you witness or have an accident please report to your tutor, Reception or Caretakers. If you are witness to an accident or near miss please give any details to your tutor. ALL ACCIDENTS AND NEAR-MISSES MUST BE REPORTED. HOW DO YOU REPORT A HAZARD? You can report a hazard to your tutor, Reception, Caretakers or you can request a Hazard Spotting form from Reception which will be sent directly to the Health & Safety Officer. If you feel a hazard is of very high risk then report it to the Health & Safety Officer immediately. FIRE If you hear a continuous fire bell then evacuate the building immediately. Do not stop to collect your bags. Do not use the lift. Do not run. Walk calmly to your nearest assembly point. DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE FOLLOWING ARE? Nearest escape route? Assembly point? Refuge Point?

Emergency • In case of FIRE: • Set off Fire Alarm and make your way out of the nearest Fire Exit. • Go to assembly point behind the (BARRIER of the CAR PARK) and wait until you are told you can leave by the Fire Service. • Do not fight fire. Do not collect your possessions. Do not use lift. • Unconscious or concussion call Ambulance(999) or attend Hospital. • Injuries ~ get First Aider at reception. • If you see anything which might be dangerous, report it. • Feel free to let staff know of any Medical condition you have and how they can provide help for you when necessary.
