  1. SANDYYA FOUNDATION Motto: Poverty Alleviation Through Quality Science Education

  2. SANDYYA FOUNDATIONMotto: Poverty Alleviation Through Quality Science Education The Sandyya Foundation is a humanitarian Non-Profit making Organisation established in Sierra Leone by the Sandyya Family – headed by M.A. Sandy, the President of the Foundation. # 5 SANDY STREET, KENEMA

  3. The mission of the foundation is to alleviate poverty through quality education, good health and nutrition for school children. Therefore the objectives are:- 1. Education focussing on the sciences, languages and technology. 2. School health program 3. Agriculture for school feeding program

  4. The President of the foundation, Mr. M.A. Sandy has already donated four parcels of land to the foundation to jump start the projects:- A twelve (12) classroom building with safe drinking water well on a 100’ x 100’ plot of land in Lumbebu. This is the first project of the foundation and houses the Lumbebu school which focuses on the Sciences. This school starts from pre-school to SS 4. Estimated cost of this building is $150,000/00 only. The school is now up to JSS 2. Classrooms

  5. Incomplete Science block on a piece of land 80’ by 80’ in Lumbebu community which is 30 metresaway. It is a two-story building block when complete which will accommodate:- -Classrooms for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Agriculture - Classrooms for the Language and Information Communication Technology (ICT). -Classrooms for SS1 to SS 4 - School Library - School Hall - School Canteen - Staffroom - Store

  6. This land also will have latrines for both boys and girls and safe drinking water well with sub-massive pump. Estimated cost for the construction of the Science Block is $230,000/00. Value of job done to date is about $30,000/00. Now soliciting funds for the completion of this project. Two buildings complete on a 100’ x 100’ land also at Lumbebu Community. Each of the two buildings have two of three bedrooms apartment each containing three bathrooms/toilets each, kitchen, living rooms and dining room to accommodate foreign staff.

  7. Having Science and Mathematics teaches is a challenge in Sierra Leone, the objective of the President is to cater for UNV/Peace Corps teachers in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. This cadre of teachers will need accommodation. Three of the apartments can be used by these teachers and the Principal. This building is about $300,000/00 and is ready for use. The President has also donated a 3.5 acre piece of land at Kondebotihun, Kenema Town which is also available for the foundation for future development.

  8. The Board of the Sandyya Foundation identified the Sciences Technology and Languages to be a major problem areas in schools in Eastern Province and Sierra Leone as a whole, therefore decided to have a Science school in Kenema, equip it, cater for trained and qualified teachers for the school. This facility can be used as satellite Science block for other schools in Kenema. The passing rate in the Science at the School Leaving Certificate is about 10%. Survey data will be made available in the school. What makes the Lumbebu school different:- (i) Class size maximum 30 pupils as compared to 100 or more in public schools. (ii) Qualified Science teachers – UNV/VSO input. (iii) Access to well equipped labs for praticals. (iv) Teachers induced therefore effective. (v) School feeding progam. (vi) Effective school health program. (vii) Healthy learning environment.

  9. The Importance of the Sciences in the Country Sierra Leone is endowed with a lot of mineral-gold, diamond, rutile, bauxite, iron ore, coltan etc. Mining these minerals required highly technically qualified Sierra Leoneans if the country should get maximum benefits. To date a high percentage of the proceeds/revenue go outside the country on expatriates due to lack of these qualified personnel. Secondly, most of our specialised medical doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses, Engineers are old and about to retire, replacement of these cadres of professionals will soon be a major challenge in Sierra Leone if nothing is done now to upgrade the Sciences in our schools and encourage our children to develop interest in the Sciences.

  10. Operating Expenses: The Lumbebu School fees is heavily subsidised compared with fee in other private schools. Most of the pupils who may be the potential Scientists cannot afford the cost and therefore will drop if normal fees are charged. In view of the above, there is need for the running cost to be subsidised by good wishers. • Top up living allowance for the International teachers at $300 per teacher per month – (300 x 12 x 6 teachers) = $ 21,600 per annum (ii) Top up salary for National teachers ($150 x 12 x 15 teachers) = $ 27,000 per annum. (iii) School feeding programme ($2 x 5 days x 300 pupils) x 40 weeks = $ 20,000 per annum (iv) Support staff ($200 x 5 x 12 months) = $ 12,000 per annum (v) School health = $ 30,000 per annum (vi) Mobility of the pupils – School bus = $ 25,000 per annum (vii) School band set and accessories = $ 6,000 per annum Total = $141,600 per annum

  11. School Feeding/Health Programme Most children come from very poor homes and who live on one meal a day therefore come to school hungry without food. Children in this category can be very intelligent but cannot focus because of hunger. Therefore, there is need to provide lunch for such kids. Secondly, most kids come to school with minor ailments like high fever, malaria, worms, headache etc. School health program can be use to provide basic first aids to such kids instead of staying home for a few days for such ailments because the family is poor.

  12. Appeal: The President and the Board of the Sandyya Foundation are appealing to individuals and well wishers for funds to carry out the following projects: (i) Complete the Science Block by September 2015 - $200,000/00 (ii) Purchase of Science equipment & reagents - $ 30,000/00 (iii) Establishing Language Lab (estimated) - $ 7,500/00 (iv) Establishing ICT Lab (estimated) - $ 15,000/00 (v) Equipping the school library (estimated) - $ 7,500/00 (vi) Other school furniture (estimated) - $ 10,000/00 (vii) Generator and water well - $ 10,000/00 (viii) Operational Expenses - $141,600/00 The above donations can be made either in cash and or in kind.
