  1. Facts, Myths and Perceptions about Students at Cal State LA Stephen Pollard Professor, Economics and Statistics, Chair, Educational Effectiveness Council and Chair Theme 2 Committee for WASC EEC Report August 11, 2010

Change Survey • A quiz to see how open we are to change. • How many like what they are doing? • How many do not like what they are doing? • How many want to change their ways? • “If we want things to stay as they are, then things are going to have to change”. The Lepoard, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. • Purpose today is to change your knowledge and perceptions about students at Cal State LA.

  3. Process for Today • You have on a separate handout a list of statements. • Each statement is either true (a fact) or false (a myth). • Take a few minutes and write for each one whether you think it is a fact or myth. I will then provide you with the answers and the data sources to support the answers .

  4. Key Definitions and Terms • Peer Institutions: Identifying Universities similar to us. Using the http://www.collegeresults.org website, we identified a set of colleges with characteristics similar to those of Cal State LA: 1) a percentage of students who are Pell Grant eligible within 15% of Cal State LA's value (53.90%0; 2) a percentage of Under Represented Minority (URM) within 20% of Cal State LA's value (55%); 3) a Median SAT less than 1000; 4) are a Public Institution and; 5) be classified as a Masters Large. These institutions and comparable data are listed in Peers.xls. : The University of Texas-San Antonio, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Bakersfield, Fresno State University, Northwestern State University of Louisiana, Northeastern State University, Troy University, CUNY John Jay College Criminal Justice, and New Jersey City University.

  5. Key Definitions and Terms • Retention Rate: Percent of Freshmen who start the second year at Cal State LA. • Graduation Rate: Freshmen who entered in a specific year and who graduate 6 years later as a percent of all freshmen who started in that same year.

Websites Used • http://www.collegeresults.org A site maintained by the Ed Trust Organization: www.edtrust.org • http://www.collegeportraits.org/ A site where colleges voluntarily self report information about themselves. Allows for comparisons on NSSE data and basic institutional data. • ir.calsatela.edu Our own Institutional Research site. Links to NSSE data and IPEDs for comparisons with other colleges and universities.

  7. Answers Guide • Number Correct • 16 to 17 you have read the WASC EER Report • 13 to 15 you are informed about our students • 10 to 12 you do have some notions about our students • 8 to 10 you guessed correctly on some of the questions • Less than 8 you don’t interact with students
