  1. Opening Career Pathways Initiative: 2006-2008 • September, 2006__YouthBuild Transfer Act signed into law • June, 2007__CS Mott Foundation begins support of Opening Career Pathways project • October, 2008__First Career Development Initiative Orientation in San Antonio Texas, CDI Framework is introduced (14 programs, some supported by MetLife) • Fall, 2008__Publication of Opening Career Pathways for Young People published by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development also supported by the CS Mott Foundation. • November, 2008__ Mott Sub-grantees selected (5 programs)

  2. Opening Career Pathways: Desired Outcomes • Industry-recognized credentials • Articulation agreements with community colleges and partnerships with employers • Long-term supports for graduates • Increasing the skills and knowledge of staff

Opening Career Pathways: Accomplishments, Scaling Up • OCP Strategic Framework scaled up through the US Department of Labor (approximately staff from 200 programs over the past two years) • YouthBuild Health Care Service and Training Handbook: A Case Study of YouthBuild Philadelphia published in April, 2009 with funds from Walmart. • Emerging relationships with the Building Trades_Multi-Craft Curriculum and Center for Energy Workforce Development

Big Idea#1: The Goals of Career Development at YouthBuild All YouthBuild graduates achieves economic security and sustainability • Every YouthBuild graduate has a career development strategy—not necessarily a specific career or specific job, but a strategy • Every YouthBuild staff person can describe an effective career development strategy and is focusing youth on career strategies

Big Idea #2: Defining a Career Strategy • Student initiated, staff supported • Early introduction to work life and careers • Access a network of external partners • Links to post-secondary education and training • Harmonize individual needs with employers’ needs • Identify credentials to move up career ladders • Predict future education and training • Provide generalized and specific job preparation • Emphasize literacy, numeracy, technology, and interpersonal skills • Provides ongoing support and follow up • Plan for income growth and asset building • Develop a “first job” entry and exit plan
