  3. Fall of Qing Dynasty 清朝的推翻 • Sun Yat Sen (Background) • 1912, Republic of China (Kuomindang) is Formed. • Show video. • “4000” years of Chinese Dynastical history has come to an end. • Three Principle of the People.

  5. Sun’s Quote and Significance. • Sun lacked military power to keep the Chinese people together. • Sun resigns after 6 weeks, and Yuan Shi Kai takes over (Military Dictator). • World War 1 gets in the way. • Treaty of Versailles angers Chinese. • May Fourth Movement and Significance.

  6. Communist China 共產中國 • 1921, The Chinese Communist Party is formed. Among the was Mao Zedong. • Sun Yat Sen decides to ally with the Soviet Union and Lenin. • Wanted to follow/adapt Lenin’s blueprint for organization of the Bolshevik.

Nationalist vs Communist 國民黨對共產黨 • Jiang Kai Shek is leader of KMT at this point. • Mao was arranging his army in south-central China. • “Swimming in the Peasant Sea” and Guerilla Warfare. • 1933, Jiang attacks Mao with 700,000 soldiers. 6 times more army than Mao. • The Communists were surrounded in a mountain.

  8. 1934, Communist Soldiers fled. (Long March) • Mao started with 100,000 soldiers and was left with only a third. • Mao hid their soldiers in caves in Northwestern China, and recruited more soldiers • Japan Invades China! • 1937, Japan bombs major cities. • Show video. • This forced a temporary truce between Mao and Jiang. • Good news for Mao!
