  1. Lynn Miller Instructional Kickoff August 27, 2010 Building an Excellent System by Building Systems of Excellence

  2. Lessons from the History Channel

  3. Expected Outcomes From Our Work Use the professional learning communities model to create a comprehensive data-driven instructional program. Deploy high-yield engagement practices in every classroom. Improvement of craft knowledge by looking at student data and professional development. Courageous conversations. Begin to develop a response to intervention system to ensure that students receive the time and support needed to close the achievement gap in reading. Students who FFB in grades and assessments can be addressed on Wednesday and Thursdays via our Multi-disciplinary Team Approach. 4.Apply PDSA and benchmarking strategies to drive continuous improvement efforts. How? Have at least 8 – 10 assessments in Horizon to build on our students predictive data

  4. What is a Professional Learning Community? “A group of educators committed to working collaboratively in ongoing processes of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve.” Learn By Doing

  5. To ensure success for every child PLC teams must answer four critical questions What is it we want all students to learn? How will we know if they have learned it? How will we respond when they don’t? How will we respond when they already know it? Learn By Doing

  9. Our Challenge: How will we use data to guide our work?

  10. The Big 4Areas of Focus for FY2011 Eliminate the knowing and doing gap first. “The answer is always in the room…” Deploy common assessments frequently and analyze the data to identify students who need additional time and support for learning, discover strengths and weaknesses in individual and collective teaching practice and measure progress toward accomplishing team goals. Act on your evidence! Develop plans for data collection, intervention and improving student achievement in math and literacy. Celebrate our success.

  11. This will be hard work, but working together we can figure it out!

  12. Systems Perspective “All organizations are perfectly aligned to get the results they are currently getting. If people in the organization knew what to do to resolve the problem, they would do it, so it is likely to be a matter of not having the knowledge, (tool) or skill to create the needed change.” Charting Your Course Conyers and Ewy

  25. Plans for success at DVMS • Action steps: • From our Grades and Assessments we need to determine the why? Won’tsvsCan’ts • We need to then collaboratively determine and deploy strategies to assist the Won’ts and Can’ts • Can’ts strategic planners are Math/LA/SPED/EL • craft knowledge and intervention strategies • Won’ts strategic planners are SS/Sci/Expl/PE and Counselors - relationship building, rewards and responsibilities
