  2. What Makes a Pirate? Pirate- a person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea. Most common definition, but one other meaning is becoming more important… Pirate can also mean: A person who uses or reproduces the work or invention of another without authorization.   4. The Golden Age of Piracy Spans about 250 years, From Columbus’s discovery of the new world in 1492 to the mid 1700’s. Most common pirate targets were merchant ships, especially Spanish Galleons and coastal towns. Concentrated Pirate activity in and around the “Spanish Main”, from roughly the northern coast of South America, along the Central American coast and up to Florida and what is now the East Coast of the USA.

Letter of Marque – issued by a government official to a private citizen. allowed them to attack ships belonging to a specific country in exchange for a portion of any loot taken. Protected the owner from any legal consequences from the Issuing country, but not the country whose ships you’ve been raiding!!!!
